Pretty villages near York

Hi

I need to stay near York for two days in October. I need to get into York but don't really like cities / big towns. Can you recommend a few pretty villages - where I might find a B&B? Ideally with a bakers, a playground and a pretty centre / green?!

I don't want to be as far out as Wetherby or Malton. Smaller than Pocklington ideally.

V grateful for ideas. I don't know the surrounding areas at all. Travelling from further north if that makes a difference (Inverness).

Dunnington?
Has a good bus service ( if needed at all)
A nice playground, bakers, couple of pubs. Older in center of village.

Haxby has a fab baker, loads of coffee shops and an award winning chippy! Also on the bus route straight into town. Not sure it counts as chocolate box "pretty" but we like it for local stuff rather than going into the madness of York.

I have relatives in Poppleton, which is beautiful!

I don’t know if this is too big as it’s more of a small town, but Thirsk is lovely. 20 minutes from a York by train, has a bakers and some nice parks. There’s also Helmsley which is a bit posher and has a castle and grounds.

Stamford bridge is a nice little town and close?

Sutton on the Forest, Sheriff Hutton, Terrington and Hovingham are all very pretty. I don't know about accommodation but I'd be surprised if the latter two don't have anywhere to stay. They all have shops.

Haxby is a small town. Good bus links and has a nice bakers, play area etc

Just the other side of the ring road

It's not 'pretty' though - there are some really pretty villages just North of York like Sheriff Hutton.

The Gnu at North Newbald?

Village has a playground, village shop and 2 pubs!

Bingitty · 03/06/2022 19:08

Thanks for the suggestions. North Newbald and Hovingham/ anywhere tree near Helmsley definitely too far- I'd like to be 20-30 mins tops into York. But thank you.

My message didn’t post properly!

Dunnington is nice, has a bakery, playground and green space. Has a bus into York. And my DDs singing teacher lives there and has a studio on AirbnB 😊

Easingwold - 20mins by car, 30mins on a bus, bakery, lovely park, couple of small playgrounds, B&B and a small hotel (The George).

Also near to Crayke which is a really lovely village (but no bakery). Has a cracking pub though and as it's on a hill, brill views over the countryside.

Coxwold also an option (again, no bakery).
