Anyone else find Tranexamic Acid absolutely useless?!

Hi,

So I'm currently sat by the pool in Spain watching my family swim and generally have fun, whilst I'm sat here with a full maxi dress, sexy period pants and bulky night time pad, with yet another period from hell.

Decided to take Tranexamic Acid for the first time, as didn't want to take hormones really and kind of just assumed they may take the edge off, but they have done absolutely nothing! I started taking yesterday, the day my period properly started, 2 tablets, 3 x a day, so so far I've taken 10 and I might as well been taking sugar pills.

Anyone else find this?

I always was prescribed 2x every 6 hours and they'd wear off after 5 or so, so I took every 5 hours during the day with a bigger gap overnight.

My 13 Yr old had a prescription and they don't do anything at all for her. She may as well be taking sugar pills too.

I had an ablation in the end. Wonderful now, don't have to consider periods at all, don't have to wear black, carry spare clothes... highly recommended the ablation.

I wouldn’t say they do NOTHING … they made my cramping worse :/

i tried them on and off a few times, but have now given up. No idea what to try next!!

Modibody advertise period bathers - I don’t know if I’d try swimming in them, but they might be OK for lying in the sun?

It made mine worse as well, I still flooded but also passed major clots which were painful and disgusting. Sorry to hear you are suffering

DisplayPurposesOnly · 03/06/2022 14:42

What are you taking them for? If it's pain, I was advised 2 tabs four times a day (and all my usual painkillers). My pain was off the charts (think rocking, whimpering, vomiting) so to be fair nothing much helped.

For heavy periods I was advised 2 tabs three times a day and it made a big difference.

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 03/06/2022 14:46

Didn't stop my bleeding, but did make me throw up. Had a hysterectomy in the end.

MsMartini · 03/06/2022 14:49

I found they worked fine well. But norethisterone pre-holiday more effective as delays period entirely (tho was then painful and heavy once back).

My GP was happy to prescribe both as long as I decided which if either to use each month and stuck to it (TA for most, norethisterone for holidays or very special events).

Redburnett · 03/06/2022 14:49

I also found them useless and got a Mirena coil instead.

KitKattaktik · 03/06/2022 14:52

I was on 3 tablets 3 times a day which made a huge difference.

I know it's no help to you right now but in future you can get Norethisterone prescribed to delay your period.

Hope it eases for you soon x

I took tranexamic acid for several years to help with my very heavy flooding periods. It worked for a while and then it stopped. The flooding got worse. A scan showed fibroids that were almost certainly the cause.

I very reluctantly tried the mirena coil but that didn't work for me either due to the position of my fibroids. I was relieved to get rid of it as it too made things worse.

A different (and much better) gynaecologist then prescribed six months of zoladex injections (one per month) and that seems to have done the trick. I have had no periods for about a year now so am hoping that I am finally through the menopause.

If mine do restart I will be insisting on a hysterectomy. Fingers crossed that they don't.

Go back to your GP and ask for referral to a gynaecologist. There are other options, so don't suffer in silence.

Flaunch · 03/06/2022 15:05

It worked really well for me as long as I started taking it the absolute right moment just as I started spotting. If I’d felt it till I was in full flow it was a waste of time.

in the end I had an endometrial ablation and it was absolutely life changing. If you’re done with kids I really couldn’t recommend it enough.

FizzClink · 03/06/2022 15:15

Ah, so a bit of a mixed bag then.

Regarding the ablation, I've got a very chunky c section scar, so don't think I'm a suitable candidate unfortunately 😕

Nope didn't work for me. I had an embolisation in the end which has been freest.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 03/06/2022 15:17

They made DWs periods worse too - just as much blood, except it was in even bigger clots. And made the pain worse.

She's waiting for an ablation now, and failing that a hysterectomy. Of course she's had to fight for both, being in her thirties and not having given birth herself (we have two children).

Abra1d1 · 03/06/2022 15:19

Me.

should have had a Mirena.

FourEyesGood · 03/06/2022 15:21

I took TA for extremely heavy periods. It made them slightly less heavy (but not enough to make things much easier; I still flooded) but made my period last for nearly two weeks. No thanks! Plus I had to pay for the privilege. I only used it for a couple of months before giving up. Roll on the menopause…

Hotcuppatea · 03/06/2022 15:26

The only thing that sorted out my heavy periods was HRT or the contraceptive pill. I know you said you don't want to do hormones, but nothing else worked for me.
