How long should I book off work to move house (if anything)?

Hoping to complete on a Thursday or Friday.

It's a pain for me to book time off work at short notice as it means rearranging appointments (think an NHS clinic - but not that!)

How much time would you book off work following the move?

I took a week. So much to do, and don’t forget you’ll be stressed and tired. I’d say 5 days minimum.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 03/06/2022 12:24

I booked off the morning of moving in day, that was it. I wanted to be there in the morning to let them in and give some direction as to what went where.

But we had a full pack and unpack service so there wasn’t anything to do really besides let them in.

If it's a pain to book time off at short notice I would just book one day for the actual move and then I would book off a week at the most convenient time for work.

We are allowed to take one day off for moving- so hoping to move on a Thursday as I have Fridays off, but if not just the day will be fine and then can use time not at work to sort once everything has been moved :)

hauntedvagina · 03/06/2022 12:30

Moved on a Thursday, I took off the Thursday and Friday.

Chocoqueen · 03/06/2022 12:33

We had a full pack/unpack service. Moved on the Wednesday and took Tuesday-Friday off - even with packers the Tuesday was manic getting the money over to the solicitors and making sure the house was clean, moving day was crazy as it didn't all fit in the van so we had to do trips ourselves - plus we didn't get the keys until mid-afternoon. The two days after weren't strictly necessary but were nice to have off to unpack and settle in.

Tulipvase · 03/06/2022 12:33

I work in a school so got completion day off paid, I then took the next day unpaid. Was fine.

HotPink22 · 03/06/2022 12:36

Should say that we won't be having a packing service! DH's parents are going to come up and we are going to hire a Luton van.

We moved on the Friday so I took off Friday, Monday and Tuesday. The wifi was getting fitted on the Tuesday and I wfh so had to be off until at least then anyway.

I could have used longer but our annual leave needs to be saved for school holidays. I would say take a week if you can.

CurbsideProphet · 03/06/2022 12:46

We both had 2 weeks as the new house needed the carpet replacing and completely redecorating before we could actually move in (they had lots of dogs and I'm severely allergic).

Thanks all 😊

Moved twice in last 23 years. One of my jobs is in a school, so it's one day only for a house move. DH - First time it was one day only and that was awkward, second time fell on a Friday and he had Monday off. Worked out well as we needed to get people in for quotes and they came on the Monday.

Cynderella · 03/06/2022 21:09

Day of move is pretty much essential unless you have enough other people to be there. If you're moving more than a couple of hours drive away, I would want the next day as well just in case of delays. I took two days when I moved with four children because everything took so long. Last time my daughter moved, we did it in a day and she had everything done by the late afternoon. But that's a two bedroomed house, one child, moving a mile and after thorough decluttering.

FluffyRabbitGal · 03/06/2022 21:15

I moved on a Friday and returned to work on a Monday. I identified 2 boxes as being ‘work boxes’ for my partner and my work bits, so that I could ensure I could get to unpack them as a priority.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/06/2022 21:18

10 days for an international move back to UK- we work for ourselves though and had to set up an office too, with lots of 'stuff'

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 03/06/2022 21:23

We moved on the Saturday and had the Friday and Monday off work. Most of the Monday was driving back to collect the cats from the cattery and taking the children to/from new school. I could have done with more time off work in the week before, but the unpacking wasn’t an issue, other than the initial getting beds up you can take your time.

HotPink22 · 03/06/2022 21:39

Hmm, some food for thought. It sounds like it might be better to take some days off before rather than after the move?

TimeToChangeItUpNow · 03/06/2022 22:47

2 days before. Monday and Tuesday after if moving on the Friday is ideal. That will allow you to not feel unpacking is taking forever.

If you can't do that much then 1 day before, 1 day after (and move day obviously). You should know 2 weeks before at least usually.

SquishyGloopyBum · 04/06/2022 07:43

I would really recommend proper movers op, and not doing it yourself. It's extremely stressful and hard work and it doesn't sound like you have much time or much help.

It's money well spent.
