If it’s norovirus, how long might it take to spread through a family?

DP and DS both started with D&V in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Sorry if it’s TMI but each were into sick once and had about 3-4 bouts of diarrhoea. They have both been ok today.

We are away at the moment and only have one bathroom. I’ve tried as much as I can to clean the bathroom and stuff and tried to use it as little as possible, not sharing towels, increased hand washing etc.

If it was norovirus, how long does it usually take to spread through a family? We are due to fly on Saturday and I’m terrified of being ill on the plane.

(I have emetophobia anyway so this is a nightmare for me but the whole plane thing has my anxiety on quite another level!)

It doesn’t sound like norovirus if they were only sick once and just a few bouts of diarrhoea, norovirus is usually far more long lasting. Whatever it is fingers crossed it doesn’t pass on 🤞

That doesn't sound like noro but the incubation period is usually 24-48 hours.

norovirus is highly contagious (& airborne) so I am surprised you don't already have it.

Anything from a couple of days to 3/4 days depending on whether you get a mild dose or more lively form. Fingers crossed it is just the water (or food).

It might not spread at all it could be down to something they ate - have they eaten anything similar?
I have emetophobia as well so do understand your anxiety.

Agree it doesn't sound like norovirus with only being sick once. Could be rotavirus.. More common and more severe in younger children. Adults are less likely to catch it (because unlike norovirus, having it confers immunity in a lot of cases and most have had it as a child).

Also emetophobic and have a DC who is very prone to sickness bugs so have a lot of experience... In most cases, the incubation period is 24-48 hours, average is about 36. If it hasn't spread by 48 hours, I'd be feeling pretty safe.

Thanks all. I think norovirus is my biggest fear as I know how easily it spreads. They did both eat melon at breakfast that day and DP had a steak for dinner which DS had a couple of mouthfuls of but DS had his first bout of diarrhoea about 2 hours after that so it seems too soon to have been that?

can’t think of any other food related things that they had but nobody else did.

How are you all today OP?

LittleOldLadies · 03/06/2022 17:05

The two who were ill are feeling a lot better today. My DS’s stomach yesterday was very gurgly which he found very difficult to deal with but a lot better today.

Its our last night here but nobody wants to do anything adventurous for dinner in case anyone becomes ill again ahead of the flight tomorrow!
