DS urine test come back abnormal, anyone have experience?

Doctor did a dip stick test for DS (2) as he had signs of a urine infection or thrush. She treated both in the meantime and we’ve finished both courses, all symptoms now gone.

I’ve got some of his result back as abnormal and still waiting on micro cultures. I’m a bit freaked out (you’ll see from my other threads I have quite bad health anxiety which I am being treated for) and just wondered if abnormal is likely to mean contaminated plus the signs of infection that were seen on the dip stick?

the doctor did say the only thing the test would show would be infection and that kidney and sugars looked fine on the dipstick test, but I’m in those awful what if loops and keep panicking that if it’s abnormal with no micro cultures growing it could mean something more serious.

I hate suffering with this so much! Any similar experiences appreciated - I know nobody can diagnose over the web.

Hi op, you know inside that it's your anxiety talking in your head. The likelihood is that the result was either because of a contaminated test or infection still showing up.
Can you speak to the GP who ordered the test for some reassurance? They will have seen results like these before I'm sure.

Thank you so much for your kind response. Because of the bank holiday I can’t speak to the doctor til Monday now as there are no appointments today.
you’re right I do know, it’s just so hard to get a grip on it and manage it

Stay away from Google and tell yourself that you aren't a medic, therefore you cannot possibly know how to interpret the information.
Distract yourself with your little one and remember that time spent worrying won't help in any way. Your plan of action is to speak to someone when you can next week, then you will hopefully be reassured.
I do sympathise - health anxiety is awful, whether the focus be on your own health or your dc. It's natural to worry about these things, but it's the unknown that you're focusing on. Try to focus instead on a plan of action and distract yourself with other things if you can. CakeBrew

Thank you I’ve calmed a little because realistically if the doctor was worried they would call me, they would risk it with a child his age. Especially since it’s now a four day weekend. I keep reminding myself of that and the fact he’s not poorly at all, no temperature, nothing, only a cough left over from a desperate infection.

When urine results come back on kids we get the microscopy results first - are there any eg white blood cells or bacteria seen which would both suggest a bladder infection.
It then takes a few more days for a culture to come back which says exactly which bacteria and which antibiotics it’s sensitive to.
It sounds like she’s been treated for a urine infection and has got better so those results are what I’d expect to see at this stage.
(sometimes we get microscopy suggestive of an infection but no actual bug grows- don’t panic if this is the case it usually just means it was a mild infection or contamination but I’d usually repeat a sample in those circs).

@bluevioletsky if I could hug you I would. Thank you for taking the time to post that, it’s really helped clarify things. I wish I didn’t react like this and am really trying hard to work on it as I know DS is going to pick up things and it’s part and parcel of having children.

thank you again, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that explanation. It was the “abnormal” that threw me a bit.

The doctor could already tell there was protein, a little bit of blood, white blood cells etc present from the dipstick all indicative of infection so I don’t know why this sent me spiralling it shouldn’t be unexpected!

You're welcome. I think it's probably worth realising that in medicine abnormal does not necessarily (or even often to be honest!) mean the same as serious.

For example blood results - the 'normal range' the lab gives covers about 95% of the population. At each end there's 2.5% of results that will fall out of the 'normal' range but could still be absolutely normal and fine for that person. Or things can be 'abnormal' but still totally expected- eg the findings of the urine result are 'abnormal' because they are not completely clear but exactly what is expected if a child has a urine infection. Bloods can be 'abnormal' on certain medications, but again they are what we would expect to see in a patient taking those medications.

Hope that makes sense!
