Staff shortages are now a national crisis

Staff shortages across many sectors is now a national crisis surely? I’ve given up expecting anything of this government, but why isn’t Labour beating them with a stick over this?

Some examples which affect me personally….

  • Can’t go on holiday due to cancelled flight, cause by lack of ground staff.
  • I work for NHS trust and we have closed a ward due to c 50% vacancies. We have plenty of money but can’t spend it. Now competing with other trusts paying increasingly high golden handshakes.
  • Tried to book restaurant for Tuesday birthday. Not possible as all places shut Monday and Tuesday due to short staff (esp chefs).
  • Poor service when we do go out. Staff look frazzled.
  • Can’t get a builder to do an extension. Often not bothering to quote. Builder friend can’t keep labourers and brickies. Paying increasingly high wages but getting poached.
  • Window fitter quoted me 2x higher than 2019 (for a much smaller window!) probably because they’re so busy and can’t increase capacity due to lack of staff. So prices have gone up by 100%.
  • Long delay in discharge for father from hospital, due to long waits for care package (caused by staff shortages). He was in hospital a lot longer than necessary and declined hugely as result.
It’s largely caused by Brexit, partly people retiring or changing livelihood during Covid…:.but why wasn’t this anticipated and what are we doing about it?

I want to see posters EVERYWHERE encouraging people to consider NHS careers. It’s a rewarding career, but impossible to cope and keep going with so few staff. We are escalating to NHS England constantly, saying we need a national solution. It’s beyond critical, but I’m not confident that there is a national drive to sort this out.

The economic and social consequences of ignoring this massive structural issue will be disastrous!

SantiMakesMeLaugh I was wondering whether long covid is one factor causing staff shortages. Those numbers are truly scary.

Yes they are.

For me, it’s crazy that the Bank of England is the only one who is talking about it and the effect it has/will have on the population.
If we have more than half a million people unable to work at all, more than will only work part time, it will have massive effect on the country (and of course in each and single individual and their families)

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 02/06/2022 16:09

More and better childcare perhaps so more women can go back to work and fill the gaps in the work force?

That's a factor but there is more at play. My circle is full of women like me. With at least one degree we used to be civil servants (me), nurses, teachers, accountants, a dentist and social workers. Now we're sahms and not because we couldn't afford childcare.

Dinoteeth · 02/06/2022 16:28

@Dinosauratemydaffodils what else do you think is the issues other than the cost of childcare.

One thing I think is an issue in professional jobs is the incredibly long hours. Expected to start at 8/8.30 finish 5.30/6 that makes it incredibly hard on kids in childcare and very difficult to balance family life.

I work part-time in a professional role but nobody ever looks for part-time professionals (I got my job with a stroke of luck).

People being expected to work rotating shifts is also an issue in certain roles. It makes childcare impossible. Few childcare providers will accommodate use on an ad-hoc basis, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday this week, Wed, Thursday, Friday next week.

Just been chatting to my DD who is band 5 NHS, her friend has just got a job for the next 4 months cleaning chalets in Polzeath @£12.50 ph, my DD gets £13.20 ph and makes decisions that can have life changing consequences for her patients.
Another mate (same age & with a degree) is now working in recruitment @ £45k p.a.

DD loves her job but the pay is terrible and neither Labour, let alone the Tories are planning on doing anything about it, with parties continuing the drive to recruit nurses from the Philippines, where they plan on getting all the other AHP's i ve no idea.

We need to sort out the NHS properly instead of tinkering. The European system is so much better but any hint of " privatisation" is shouted down.

What is the European way?

AchatAVendre · 02/06/2022 17:54

hashtagjubilee · 02/06/2022 17:47

What is the European way?

Well, The Netherlands has a system of competing healthcare funds which cannot do things such as raise premiums, exclude pre-conditions and cover those not earning, otherwise they are funded by employers' contributions. If a healthcare fund doesn't perform well or had particularly long waiting lists, then people have the choice to leave it and move to another one.

But you can just google other countries such as Germany, France, etc to see how they all do it.

Macmoominmamma · 02/06/2022 17:54

Yet the Tories who brought in Brexit don’t appear to be doing anything about creating this high wage society.

You have to admit Brexit is a shambles. There is no plan, no oven ready deal. For those who voted for this…. you got what you deserve. You can’t / won’t ever complain, because to do so would mean you got it wrong.

mumda · 02/06/2022 18:02

Jobs with odd hours need car ownership. Wages just don't reflect that. Some of the unfilled airport jobs locally start at 3am.

Am awful lot of people I know work part time.

Alexis43 · 02/06/2022 18:12

The NHS is on its knees. Hospitals are very under-staffed. Very difficult to find a nurse. Patients using buzzers have to wait a very long time for a response. I have seen this with 2 different relatives recently. At Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth hospital, 33 wards are on a 'red warning' list:
www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-news/patient-safety-fears-glasgow-hospital-24012912. I quote:
""This means that nursing staff numbers or skill mix may be creating a risk to patient safety or there are issues affecting patient safety that requires immediate attention.”

PUGMEISTER21 · 02/06/2022 18:14

Surely the extra £350 million a week we are getting from leaving Europe can be used to solve some of this 😅

KellyJ28 · 02/06/2022 18:16

Couldn't agree more! I work for an agency across different care homes. Travel is part of the job, but wherever I go they're short staffed. In one home there were two agency staff to 40 residents. The other night there were 20 residents, me (agency) and one senior staff. In care the ratio of staff to service users is very bad. I suppose people voted Tory because of Brexit and "lazy benefit scroungers" without really considering the consequences. For these people I have no sympathy at all.

Have you ever heard the phrase "two wings of the same bird" in relation to political parties?

A lot of EU nationals filled these roles, and they were recently asked to leave the country, so....

Were they? I didn't know any working people were asked to leave. Do you have a source for this?

I'm reading this thread with interest.

pay and conditions have declined for so long, while the weight of expectation gets greater...of course anyone who can pack it in, will do so.

Shortage of staff is affecting other European countries, went to Ireland on holiday last weekend and queue at Dublin Airport was very bad, restaurant with minimum staff,

What we need to do is shift the million or so healthy people (I do not include those that are severely disabled) into the jobs vacancies and stop benefits. There is no reason whatsoever why anyone should be claiming benefits now when we have so many jobs available!!!!

Couldn't agree more - we pay out milions in benefits to how many people who simply "decline" to do some of the jobs available just because they don't take their fancy - I was once told by someone a life on benefits was their lifestyle choice and working was for mugs! says it all! Height of Covid and I had spent a long day at work, their bloody "lifestyle choice" didn't go down well with me!!

Humans aren’t fluid like other assets. Not every job will suit every person and people can’t just up sticks and move to the other end of the country where jobs are due to things like tenancy contracts or home ownership, family responsibilities etc.

No, every job doesn't suit everyone but there are enough around to be able to cater for most - without the need to move from one end of the country to the other - job vacancies are a national problem not just in certain parts of the country

Thanks ! The link is still up , my error...
Tho I wonder if anyone had taken the time to investigate further ? I doubt it.
Ppl only bother when a situation affects them personally.

Funny there's no shortages in the highest paid salaries : they're lapping up the goodies.

Still, few listen, let alone understand.

I thought the great resignation was affecting America and Australia too.

I have been watching with interest for some time.

We are struggling to recruit solicitors and support staff at the firm I work at. The result is client service is being impacted and the remaining ones here are working weekends.
