Would you pay a debt that wasn't yours?

For the last week I've been getting texts from Eon saying I owe £2300
I'm with a totally different supplier.
I contacted them and they said they didn't have my address on their system but they had my phone number.
They said they would remove it.
I didn't have a clue how they had my number and a £2300 balance
Then it clicked my late nana (who passed 3 years ago ) was with n power (and Eon took their clients ) we had the same name and as she had dementia I used to ring from my mobile (I'm assuming at one point I left my number )
Now when my nan passed my late uncle was in charge of sorting everything out.
After the funeral there was no money left.
I'm assuming this is that debt.
What do I do? Do I ring them and see if this is what's happened ? Or leave it ?
I can't afford £2300

My understanding is that debts end when the person who ran them up dies (assuming there’s no money in the estate). Good luck sorting it but no, I can’t see how you could owe the money.

Hello,

I used to work in banking in the bereavement department and if there was no money in your estate to pay overdrafts / bank loans then the debt died with you. I imagine the same will be for utility bills. I would call and explain, offer you are able to send a death certificate and advise there are no funds available in the estate. Xx

It's not your debt so don't pay it. Send an email to them stating that it is not your debt, you are an entirely different person. Then ignore unless they contact you.

You are not liable for this debt..so no I don't pay it.

I’d leave it. It’s not your debt, sounds very high for a normal power bill, unless her house was left empty with the heating going full blast.
Was your uncle her executor? If so, send any letters on to him. I know bills have to be paid in the order of taxman, funeral director then any others but if there was no money then nothing he can do.

I don't understand how the bill got so high.
The property was left empty for well over a year ...so I'm assuming my uncle didn't tell them she passed,so they have kept billing her
It was only a 1 bedroom flat

Scam???

turquisie · 31/05/2022 19:29

I thought a scam at first but I contacted EON on social media and they confirmed they had my mobile number but no account and no details of my address.

Of course you don’t pay it! This isn’t your bill. It might be your nana’s bill. Or it might be the bill of someone with a number that is similar of yours that has been written down wrongly. (I have had the same number for nearly 20 years and I get regular texts from the Nationwide about Jill’s mortgage rate. My name is not Jill and I do not have a mortgage with the Nationwide.)
