I think it's absolutely right that those most in need get some help. I also understand that means testing it is time consuming and costly.
But surely if people get "bonuses" they don't need, they'll spend it on other stuff and that increased demand in the market will fuel inflation.
For example, a friend of mine, a comfortably off single middle aged man, living in a smallish house (because that's all he needs) has just received his council tax "rebate". He's spent it on running shoes and because to him it is "free" money, he's treated himself to more expensive ones than he would usually buy.
There's nothing wrong with that, I'd do similar, but multiplied x thousand times, what's the effect on the already sky high inflation rate?
