No water?

I've just seen a thread on social media where hundreds of people have said their children won't drink water and would dehydrate without squash or cordial. I can't get my head around it, water doesn't really have a flavour to dislike. Surely the majority of children would still drink unsweetened water, would yours?

One dc only really likes water and not squash or juice.
The other one vice versa. Have to try and wean her off squash as dentist said even the sugar free stuff is bad for teeth

No, mine didn’t in primary & someone snitched on him and told that he had squash in his bottle. Result was he never drank in school again.

he liked milk but we obviously couldn’t send that in to school.

I drink nothing but water but they clearly used to give squash in nursery so that’s why he got a taste for it.

(I don't like water 🤫)

Jellybean23 · 30/05/2022 20:38

That's the fault of the parents for raising them on squash. They haven't done their children any favours.

BrutusMcDogface · 30/05/2022 20:39

I know plenty of children who would dehydrate instead of drinking water, for example 9 out of the 10 children in my class (SLD school).

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/05/2022 20:40

DD didn't get squash. Millions of children across the world don't. And they don't all die of dehydration.

TopCatsTopHat · 30/05/2022 20:40

My kids think water is the most refreshing drink for thirst and only want squash or pop as a treat. I was the same as a kid (now I drink mostly tea with occasional water), so I assumed that was normal and it didn't occur to me to offer anything else. So whether it's nature or nurture I don't know.

toastedbagiel · 30/05/2022 20:41

One of my adult DC only drinks water, one won't touch it.

In our case it was nursery that introduced DC to squash and, as he has ASD, it was impossible to stop when the only option was him drinking nothing or squash.

It also depends entirely where you live and your water supply, if you’re talking about tap water anyway. I grew up hating water as it just tasted vile. Moved to London for 10 years and I had no problem drinking the tap water and switched entirely to water.

I have now moved back to my home town and my god the water is absolutely disgusting. I really tried, but it just tastes chemically. It’s the same with any household round here that has this certain water supply company, and it’s always been the case.

My daughter will now also only drink squash (super super diluted!) and I really don’t blame her.

It aggravates me so much as they advertise the water company on tv saying how amazing it is and I’ve never been so angry at an advert.

I’ll probably just have to switch to bottled but it’s such a faff.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/05/2022 20:51

Could you not just buy a Britta?

Or get one of those under the sink filter things? Or a fridge with it built in?

Don't do bottled. It's incredibly bad for the environment.

BeautifulDragon · 30/05/2022 20:53

It's definitely about what they are used to. I grew up on squash, but have always given mine water because I want to protect their teeth.

It starts from that 4 months+ 'baby juice' that people buy and goes from there.

Sparkesy · 30/05/2022 20:54

I agree with the above, it depends where you live. I grew up where water tastes awful from the tap, but have lived in various places as an adult and in many places it tastes of nothing.

So for some children in certain areas it just wouldn't have an appealing flavour, nothing to do with poor parenting choices

PregnantAgainOhMy · 30/05/2022 20:54

Yeah a britta is a good idea! You've just reminded me that I did actually buy one to try months ago and see if it helps. I shall find it out!

Oooo do report back.

We have a charcoal Japanese thingy as well. Binchotan it's called.

Malariahilaria · 30/05/2022 20:56

I grew up in part abroad where water tasted sooo sweet. Moved to London, water is grim. I now only drink water with a few drops of lime. Even better sparkling. Tap water is a nope from me. Kids drink it with food but prefer milk or juice with water. I can see why some people might reject it.

LouMoo13 · 30/05/2022 20:57

I hate water myself but I can get my DD to drink it ok. Personally I think it does have a weird taste and that's what I don't like.., I've tried bottled, tap and filtered water. I will drink fizzy water though and boiled water if I'm ill! Grin
I was never given juice as a child so no idea why I'm like this...

Sparkesy · 30/05/2022 21:07

If you live in an area where water tastes bad straight from the tap, you can put it in the fridge in a jug for a while and the bad taste does lessen, I do this now when visiting my parents who's water tastes awful from the tap
