Child benefit question

RichardsGear · 30/05/2022 14:04

Can anyone answer this please? There are three children in a family all eligible for child benefit. Once the eldest is ineligible due to age, does the higher rate eldest child payment then move to the second child, or do the middle and youngest child still fall under the additional child rate?
Thanks.

I don't know the answer for sure but thinking about it logically, your second child does not become your eldest child when the eldest hits 18, they stay your second etc, so I'd say they continue to stay under the additional child rate

No. You get the higher rate for your oldest eligible child. Once the eldest is an adult and no longer eligible, you will have 1 (the middle child) at higher rate and the youngest at additional rate.

I agree, but then you could say they are the eldest child eligible for the benefit! I can't find an answer anywhere official so thought this situation must apply to hundreds, even thousands, of people on here and someone would know.

Yep higher rate then goes to the next child. Years of knowledge of this one Grin

Yes you will get the higher rate for your next eldest child. X
