What does a handover look like in your job?

I'm taking a new role in a different organisation - senior leadership role. The new company have put me in touch with the incumbent person, organised a number of meetings. There is an expectation that I will start to get to know clients, attend public meetings etc., however I'm still employed and working for my previous work. Just wondering what a handover would usually look like and if this is more, or less than usual (obviously this depends on the role and company).

Not usual! I'm in prof services and have recently taken on a senior leadership role. I didn't have any contact with them before I started. I was on 12 weeks gardening leave and I think that means you can't have contact anyway, I may be wrong on that though.

I'd be a little concerned they're effectively asking you to work for them before you've even started.

This would be a huge red flag for me. I’m leaving one senior leadership role for another and there’s no expectation to do anything in the run up.

You get the handover once you join, not before. There could be confidentiality issues and all sorts otherwise. Red flag.

Completely inappropriate. If they can't facilitate the handover after you start, and more importantly are actually being paid by them to do the job, then that's their problem. Would instantly have me questioning if I want to work for a company that thinks this is okay...
