walking the Camino

I am thinking of walking the camino next year. Specifically, the whole of Camino Frances which is supposed to take 33 days. Has anyone done this? Do you have any tips, recommendations or warnings?

Did you ever have difficulty getting a room? If I walked it early September to mid October then it would be busy but not height of season I think?

I went at this time of year and I don't recall ever being turned away - except once but there was another hostel close by.

Thanks @catsnore that's helpful

I know that mucking in and sharing rooms is part of the Camino experience, but I’m an insomniac and the slightest snore wakes me up. I was planning on getting a room by myself each night. Has anybody managed this consistently without booking ahead or is it better to use a company?

@Horological absolutely I did and I finished mine about this time of year

The only days I recommend booking in advance is the first two days, roncevalles and if you want to stay at Orisson I would recommend booking there

@Atreus I would be very grateful to see your spreadsheet too if you don't mind!

I am thinking of doing a section of the Camino in October 2024.

Tadpole10 · 12/04/2024 07:55

@Horological did your plans come together, are you on your Camino right now?

I hope so and I hope it's amazing! I'd love to hear how you're doing.

@Tadpole10 thanks for your interest! I am going in September/October and I am very excited.

I decided to book ahead, but not with a company. Most of them I found on booking.com which has a huge variety of places along the Camino from shared dorms to hotels. Have booked some shared dorms, some hotels and one air b and b. Just reservations and pay when you arrive.

I'm considering this for end of September going into October. Perhaps see you there Horological! Have no plans to book ahead, I like the idea of winging it and being a bit nomadic, which may backfire but I will see.

I am thinking October 2024 as well, but I'll only be doing the final 100k probably over about a week. Enjoying the research and imagining now.
