Should I go to the doctors with this? (gross eye pic)

My eye has been like this since Thursday. Doctor Google said its conjunctivitis and that doctors won't do anything. It's so sore, swollen and irritated, plus I look like a monster! 😫

Should I try and see a doctor or just hope it goes on its own?

Pharmacy will help, or GP

RingBinderInjury · 30/05/2022 08:42

Visit your pharmacist. Likely you’ll get cholamphenicol eye drops.

Go to the chemist and see a pharmacist.
Have you been cleaning it with cooled boiled water ?

Drops from the chemist for conjunctivitis.

Go to a pharmacy. If it's conjunctivitis, they can sell you the eyedrops / eye ointment (chloramphenicol).

HillCrestingGoat · 30/05/2022 08:46

Definitely pharmacy. Pharmacies are great places for advice and you can just walk in.

Givemethestrength · 30/05/2022 08:48

@KangarooKenny i have but it hasn't made a difference

Will pop to the pharmacy later as suggested, thanks!

Definitely pharmacist, and the treatment is usually far cheaper than cost of prescription.

Pharmacy and chloramphenicol eye drops/cream. Can't remember the trade name.

blobby10 · 30/05/2022 09:29

When we had conjunctivitis as kids, my mum used to get us to hold a used but still moist teabag on the affected area - apparently there was something in the tannin that helped? Anyone else remember this? I haven't heard it for years but I know the vet suggested it for the cat when it had an eye infection a few years ago!

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 30/05/2022 09:38

If it's viral conjunctivitis, chloramphenicol won't help (might make it worse).

See what pharmacist thinks.

I’m a pharmacist, definitely looks like conjunctivitis. Have you had any pus coming out of it and sticky in the morning? If so, it’s likely to be bacterial conjunctivitis, especially if it’s just the one eye. You can get chloramphenicol eye drops, as long as you don’t have certain conditions. I usually advise patients not to bother, unless particularly bad as conjunctivitis is self limiting and goes within 7 days, the latest evidence show chloramphenicol only reduces the length by approximately 24 hours and can cause irritation itself. Of course, if you still feel like you want to try it, no problem. I would say with bathing your eye, it’s important you do it as soon as you wake up and before you go to bed. Try to do it as frequently as you can during the day.

Bathe the area with cooled camomile tea.
