Does the UK suck?

So I have been watching Channel 4 New Life in the Sun.

And it has really been an eye opener.

It made me think...does the UK actually suck? And we are too institutionalised/subject to propaganda to realise?

Here are the reasons the UK sucks:

  1. Weather sucks and the country looks dark and grey all the time

  2. Roads are narrow, unpleasant to use, and crowded everywhere

  3. Houses are small and full of mould everywhere you look. There is nothing romantic about the Cotswolds: it's ancient peasant housing that should be knocked down

  4. People look pale and miserable

  5. NHS only useful when you reach 65+

  6. Rate of tax is astronomically high (I am two years into a graduate job pays marginal tax is 60%)

  7. There is crime and general decrepitude everywhere you look

  8. Idiots in charge of the country with no critical thinking ability

  9. National caste system as a derivative of Norman invaders

  10. Opportunities for young people suck because they can't earn enough to buy houses to offers stable family life

  11. Low-level drug dealing in every city/town/village if you know what to look out for

  12. Private school now astronomically expensive

  13. Every business transaction is in some way a scam in the UK. Low-level scamming each other is the basis of the British economy

  14. Legacy of colonialism, sexism, institutional racism, caste system derived from royals. It's basically just awful.

What do you think?

At least we have Dyson. They suck very well indeed.

CaliforniaDrumming · 29/05/2022 22:49

I am not British and love the UK. Maybe you need to be an outsider to see it. I would consider myself bloody lucky if I were allowed to stay.Though the cost of living crisis worries me.

LizBennet · 29/05/2022 22:49

I think you could pick fault with most countries tbh.

Mythril · 29/05/2022 22:50

I moved to the UK in my early 20s and am still here 15 years later, I love it.

Nowhere is perfect.

WellThatsMeScrewed · 29/05/2022 22:54

YABU for just this one: Private school now astronomically expensive

I really don’t hold private education price as a standard we should be holding our selves up to.

This should actually say:

12 The education system is massively unfair, disproportionately supporting those already economically well off so as a result talent and ability is missed.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 29/05/2022 22:54

No country is perfect.

I do agree with young people not being able to get on the housing ladder. That is a real problem.

Yes we need to bring back grammar schools

Rubyroseyposey · 29/05/2022 22:56

There is certainly problems. The shit show of a government and the fact that critical thinking seems to be defunct - but I would rather be here than idk, Honduras 😅

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 29/05/2022 22:56

And I think we will be grateful for our cold climate with climate change.

Vursayles · 29/05/2022 22:58

“There is nothing romantic about the Cotswolds: it's ancient peasant housing that should be knocked down”
😂😂😂

You had me at general decrepitude
tbh. A lot of fair points, well made.

YukoandHiro · 29/05/2022 22:58

@ILoveAllRainbowsx like in Kent where they have grammars but the poorest students massively underperform the rest of the south east? No thanks

AyeUpMeDuck · 29/05/2022 22:58

It's not as good as it could be.
But it's much better than it could be.

Spitescreen · 29/05/2022 22:59

This is a bit silly, OP — it reeks of a weird kind of Little Britainishness and exaggerated miserabilism. Haven’t you ever lived anywhere else for comparison’s sake? I’ve lived all over the world, and spent almost twenty years in different parts of England, ten of them in London, which I loved. I did eventually leave, as Brexit was a disaster for my research field and the university sectoral a whole, and yes, you currently have a spectacular clusterfuck of a government, and the royal family is an embarrassing anachronism, and I did feel it had become a more xenophobic society by the time I left, but England (can’t speak for Wales or Scotland) has a lot of good things going for it, especially culturally, and London is a great city.

CaliforniaDrumming · 29/05/2022 23:02

The wonderful British sense of humour. Makes up for a lot. If I were to actually list all the things I loved, I would be here all day.

123LiveLaughLove123 · 29/05/2022 23:02

@Spitescreen I have lived abroad for extensive periods of time. However, I always felt that I was a 'diplomat' or representative i.e. visiting the country with the implicit assumption I would return home. It is only since rethinking this notion that I have begun to think that maybe the UK isn't actually that good at all?

Greenpurplepalm · 29/05/2022 23:02

Bloody hell it’s not that cold or miserable! Maybe that’s just your out look? In which case anywhere would probably ‘suck’ to you

HeddaGarbled · 29/05/2022 23:02

I think you’re talking bollocks. Exaggeration, hyperbole, inaccuracy and extrapolation in every point. I haven’t got the energy to correct every point in detail but would be happy to do one or two if you’d like to narrow it down.

123LiveLaughLove123 · 29/05/2022 23:03

@HeddaGarbled please narrow it down. I would love to hear your opinion and refutations of my hyperbole.

No, it doesn't.

PurpleButterflyWings · 29/05/2022 23:05

Rather live here than anywhere else. Would HATE to live in Australia or America.

PixellatedPixie · 29/05/2022 23:05

As a foreign born and bred person who has lived here for many years, I find it quite amusing how British people often view their own country. - - — The UK has very low crime on an absolute level.
— UK has some of the safest roads in the world - this is important if you come from a country where everyone has 4/5 close family or friends who have died in traffic accidents 😞

  • Paris, Johannesburg and many other cities have the same rainfall. The weather isn’t bad at all - you don’t get the extremes of hot and cold that you get in New York or many parts of Europe.
  • We don’t have gun control issues or huge numbers of people trying to outlaw abortion.
  • We have an amazingly fertile economy to launch new companies whether big or tiny.
  • Despite the idea that Daily Mail reading Brexiteers are around every corner, people here are far more humble, worldly and kind than in many countries.
  • There are more mixed race marriages in the UK than anywhere else in the world.

Stay away then. We'll cope without you.

nearlyspringyay · 29/05/2022 23:06

Where is better then?

CaliforniaDrumming · 29/05/2022 23:07

I am ok with the weather in London though people are always apologising to me for it! Bless them.

PixellatedPixie · 29/05/2022 23:08

Sorry I mens too add that if you are feeling crappy about living here you should probably go and live overseas. Who knows, it might be the answer to all your problems or at least give you perspective. Also, I find that when people are feeling low in their lives generally they will often blame the country or place they live in. When their lives are going well everything around them looks brighter and better.
