Sorry posted too soon. He's awake and trying to move but can't seem to fly. I've brought out a sauce of water but he's not interested. I'm on hold to RSPCA

Ah bless. I'd put it in a box as he's a sitting duck for cats there, and then phone RSPCA and maybe post on local FB community pages to see if he's escaped from somewhere?

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 29/05/2022 20:12

You need to pick it up with a teatowel and place in a lined cardboard box and put it somewhere dark and quiet.

Tomorrow morning, take it to any veterinary surgery - you don't need an appointment - and they'll assess its condition. It won't cost you anything because it's wildlife.

The RSPCA won't do anything. They only exist to raise money. They're useless.

MallampatiCatty · 29/05/2022 20:13

There will be a local vet on call - can you give them a ring? They can usually advise and are really nice even if they can't help themselves

MallampatiCatty · 29/05/2022 20:14

Or local wildlife centre. Roughly where are you located OP?

Cuddlywaterfall · 29/05/2022 20:16

Ah thanks mumsnet! I'm in London SW16, googling vets now. Sorry I don't have any pets so clueless!

If there’s a medivet near you they’ll treat wildlife. A lot of other vets just put to sleep.
if not, see if there’s a local Facebook group for injured wild birds. In the meantime put it in a box somewhere dark and quiet with water and keep it warm (fill an old sock with rice and microwave, but not hot enough to burn the bird!)
You can throw a towel over it to catch it. Wash your hands well afterwards!

Thanks team. I called an emergency vet who put me in touch with the London wildlife protection society. Waiting for someone to call me back now. Poor little guy, I don't really like birds but I feel bad for this one!

Word of caution. If you rescue one of these parakeets you are not supposed to release it back into the wild as they are viewed as potentially detrimental to native birds.

Cuddlywaterfall · 29/05/2022 20:46

Ok thanks @EvilEdna1 I didn't know that. Anyway he's in a box in my utility room Grin

Aww good for you op, trying to help it.
It looks really sad lying there

Cuddlywaterfall · 29/05/2022 21:29

I know I feel so sorry for the poor fellow. Anyway for future reference the London Wildlife Protection people are the ones to contact if anyone else has this issue!

Don't worry about the re release - there are hundreds of thousands of these ring tailed parakeets in SW London so one more rerelease will make no difference!
