Have you ever been anywhere on holiday that was like the emperors new clothes?

I did. Last year I went to a very small hotel in Greece. 16 rooms only with pages and pages of great reviews.

When I arrived all the tables were pushed together and everyone was sat together pissed as farts getting louder and louder. One woman was drunker and swearier than the rest and it turned out she was the owner.

It was expected that you socialise and drink at the hotel even though the entire pool had no sun from 1pm and the surrounding area was beautiful. The owner would bark at you if you asked for food from the menu and would openly slate other guests for making reasonable requests. And the interrogation you got if you went out of the hotel was crazy.

Luckily I met another lovely solo traveller who felt the same as me so we paired up and left the hotel at the same time each day to share the interrogation. I will never stay at another small hotel again because of this.

Anyone else?

'I wasnt a fan of cornwall at all, perhaps as a scot I have been spoiled but i was dissappointed.'

Spoiled by what? The Isle of Arran is one of my favourite places on Earth, but the beautiful Scottish coast is mostly punctuated by hideous, squat, pebble-dashed houses.

Sanfransisco. Went there in 2001. An absolute shithole. Cold, full of drug addicts, prostitutes and homeless. Would never go back.

Went on a day trip to Rhodes when we went to Turkey. Noisy, smelly, like a building sight. I always fancied Greece but after that I would never go there.

Rhodes is my least favourite part of Greece. I wouldn't rule out Greece based on Rhodes.

I love Scotland. I’ve been to Edinburgh, Inverness and the highlands twice and everyone we met was lovely.

LetHimHaveIt · 29/05/2022 18:48

'And Glasgow is the friendliest city in the UK, in my experience.'

Totally agree. Filmed a tv show there once and was staggered by how friendly everyone was. Taxi drivers; barmen; bank clerks; checkout girls. Loved it.

Benjispruce4 · 29/05/2022 18:50

Yeah righto.

Christ almighty....this is so ignorant, offensive and downright wrong.

Plenty of countries dislike Brits, BTW. They just hide it better.

Chubarubrub · 29/05/2022 18:51

I agree with Paris, hated it. Everyone was so rude and literally laughed at me trying to speak French.

Its so true. I got a 2:1 in languages, one being French so I css ask hold my own but felt like the slightest hint of an accent was enough to jump on me.

I spent years learning the culture, history, politics and language of a country, to only wish in an instant that I hadn’t bothered!

Berlin on the other hand, completely the opposite. Very happy to be speaking to me in German, very friendly and helpful.

I don’t know who hurt Parisians tbh 🫢

Melbourne, depressing, cold, boring.

I've been to Oz twice and was also underwhelmed with Melbourne. There was just something a bit quiet and boring about it.

The first time at least a big, glamorous Hyatt hotel, bar and restaurant complex had just opened, which was gorgeous, but when we went back a decade later almost everything in it bar the hotel was sadly closed down.

Adelaide on the other hand is an under-rated gem - there was something gleaming about it compared to Melbourne and it's clothes shops when we went were better than Sydney!

TitInATrance · 29/05/2022 18:53

Loved Malta, especially the old walled city, and never had a problem with the buses there.

Disappointed with the Algarve, nicer scenery and similar beaches at home, couldn’t find much of interest to visit.

Benjispruce4 · 29/05/2022 18:54

@Kris02 Just one of Ireland’s beaches in July. Loads of space, white sand and mountains.

Phos · 29/05/2022 18:56

Comments about Scotland reminded me, I can't stand Edinburgh. Just find it dark and depressing. I like Glasgow so much more.

With LA, I've been told to enjoy it now you have to stay in a community, as the obvious places are now a no go area and rife with poverty etc.

Airbnbs are astronomical though so it helps to know someone. Some friends stayed in a quite modest home of a friend last year when she was away and loved it.

Iamthewombat · 29/05/2022 18:58

And at Knock airport they make you pay a tax to leave. As if it were a third world country, not a grabby local authority. I was pleased to pay it, incidentally. To leave.

Florence - it was generally beautiful but just seemed completely unappreciated by the locals. I was shocked at the amount of graffiti on the sculptures & buildings.
DH & I had a couple of great holidays in Turkey but when we visited Marmaris, it felt like Blackpool. Really glad we didn’t book there.Yet it’s always advertised as a great resort.

For our honeymoon, we had a tour of Italy. First thing we saw in Florence, 'Florence is shit' in graffiti. Couldn't believe that the local council would keep it up, it had been there awhile too.

Benjispruce4 · 29/05/2022 19:03

Reported your xenophobic post @Kris02

Benjispruce4 · 29/05/2022 19:04

I mean @Iamthewombat

BlackandBlueBird · 29/05/2022 19:04

@Iamthewombat They used to do that at Newquay airport too. Maybe they still do. I’ve also always been happy to pay for the same reason!

DoraSpenlow · 29/05/2022 19:06

Naples. I was so disappointed. Dirty, polluted, rammed with traffic, beautiful buildings covered with graffitti. I love the Italians though.

Also Acapulco. It's heyday was probably 50 years before I visited.

Oh get over yourself. Try not to confuse teasing with xenophobia.

RoseLunarPink · 29/05/2022 19:06

Southern Spain - coast was an endless building site, ugly and the sea was horrible, too rough to swim in and everyone just sat on loungers and started at it. Went inland to Ronda which was pretty, but so windy it was awful going outside.

also Tobermory. At the height of balamory popularity, they had the perfect chance to make it welcoming and make money from tourists - they could have done that tastefully and made it lovely. Instead it was just grim, so unfriendly, scary pubs, nothing to do, nowhere to eat except one Italian restaurant, everyone else looked at us (totally normal, quiet family) like shit on their shoe.

one thing I’ve noticed about rural Scotland is that there are some lovely places, but most of the friendliness and tourist hospitality is actually provided by non-Scots. Lots of English, Irish, Australians, Italians etc running pubs, cafes, hotels and activities. I don’t think all Scots are rude and unwelcoming but I’ve definitely experienced it. And I get that maybe people don’t like tourists, but it’s strange not to take advantage of them.

Benjispruce4 · 29/05/2022 19:11

It’s offensive @Iamthewombat to mock the accents and culture of another nation.

Heart78 · 29/05/2022 19:15

Lived in NYC for several years and loved it; mind you, I very rarely went to Times Square or any other tourist trap and experienced other much nicer neighborhoods that wouldn’t necessarily be on the average tourist’s schedule.
Never been impressed by the Hamptons or LA.
Also would never return to Milan and really did not enjoy Tunisia. Contrary to a lot of people, I don’t mind Center Parcs, though it is ridiculously overpriced!

SchoolThing · 29/05/2022 19:15

Iamthewombat · 29/05/2022 19:06

Oh get over yourself. Try not to confuse teasing with xenophobia.

It really was a terrible and ignorant post. You come across as a nightmare tourist.

Iamthewombat · 29/05/2022 19:17

What I am mocking, if you read the post, is the behaviour of professional Oirish people. If that’s still unclear, the people I am mocking are a bit like professional cockneys, or professional scousers, or professional Catholics. The type who build their entire personalities around a trait or a culture, to the detriment of that culture, for their own silly or selfish ends. So there is no need to wring your hands on behalf of the Irish nation, since they are probably equally irritated by the same people making a show of them.
