Anyone live near a military firing range?

We are looking at a property that borders the Stanford Training Area military firing range. I was wondering if anyone lives near this or any other firing range and can give me an idea of what the noise would be like?

Thanks

I grew up on the edge of a military training area and it was completely fine. Lots of nature on your doorstep, good for walks. My teenage brother use to roam around looking for used shells though (doh!)...

It's fine. They don't use them all the time and the houses are usually a good distance from the actual shooting.

Work out the direction of the prevailing wind too.

Vaguely in that you can hear it depending on the wind direction. As PP said, great for walking - I'm more bothered by the cyclists than the firing.

It's fine. You get used to it. Just remember they do night training too but notices go up so you are warned
It's comforting in a weird sort of way

Yes it is comforting, I find that too. I’m next to a fairly busy training area where they practice blowing the crap out of each other, some of the bangs are really loud, but it never really bothers me.

Eastangular2000 · 29/05/2022 11:18

Thank you. Does it tend to be all day or more for an hour or two then stops for a while etc

For me it’s pretty random, often at dawn or very early morning, sometimes in the night. Doesn’t usually go on and on. Maybe an hour or so and then quiet. Not normally at weekends as the areas near me get used by the public quite a lot.

We hear the shooting and blowing up of things here is South West Surrey. It's a background noise, only intermittently and we don't really notice it any more than the train going by in the distance, or the local A road. The nature that lives in and around and walks across the ranges, are fabulous.

I know someone who used to live close to Stirling Lines, they always said if anything major happened it would be one of the first places to be attacked. At least it would all be over in a flash.

Eastangular2000 · 29/05/2022 12:46

This is all quite reassuring😊. Interesting about the nature as well, it’s one of the things we noticed. Lots of birds and animals around, I was surprised they don’t all get scared off by the shooting!

I live quite near a firing range. Ours is artillery so low, dull thuds. We can look up the dates/times online but I never bother as once my brain got used to what it sounds like, I don't really notice it much. Tends not to be weekends, probably one late evening every couple of weeks

Thank you all.

It tends to typically happen when it's pouring down with rain here!

Yes, you can hear it; no, it doesn't bother people. The only time I can remember particularly is they were obviously trying some rather large pyrotechnics out and it did bring us all out of our houses to check there wasn't something worse than the army on manoeuvres. We all came out, looked over and saw the smoke rising and went "oh, only the army" and went inside again.

First time my pil stayed my mil said, clearly thinking she was being a bit funny "that noise sounds just like gun fire"... she was a bit put out when we replied "that's because it is." But actually we'd already grown so used to it that we weren't really noticing it and we'd only been there a few weeks.

I stay in middle of Salisbury plain. It does get quite loud but I enjoy the bangs lol.

There is likely to be a published firing times list each month so you can plan ahead. e.g. we can only go on the plain when the flags are down to indicate no live firing.

At least we know there will be no new housing estates built behind us due to military camp etc. Helicopters can be quite loud too but they are rarely late at night.

Curlygirl06 · 29/05/2022 19:46

When they do big exercises there's a lot of night fighting, plane and helicopter flying, tank manoeuvres etc. When the big artillery goes off it's quite loud, it reminds me of the dinosaur stomping scene in Jurassic Park, a far off noise that you don't quite know where it's coming from.

We live in a garrison town and they publish a list of times in the local paper when night manoeuvres are planned. You get used to it.
