People using males instead of men in a sentence

Is it a new thing or haven’t I been paying attention? it’s more the plural version I think grates.

‘I’d like to thank the three females who helped my granddad earlier’ just doesn’t seem to flow as well ‘I’d like to thank the three women who helped my granddad earlier’. It sounds awfully formal like the way police would describe a suspect.

The police seem to use "male" instead of "man". Not sure why.

SausageinaBun · 28/05/2022 22:18

I suspect it's used by the same people who say, "If you want more information please contact myself." I think people have ideas about sounding formal.

PeekAtYou · 28/05/2022 22:18

I think I've seen young people talk like this eg young men talking about fit females rather than fit birds iyswim.

Name1232 · 28/05/2022 22:22

Female/male is much clearer nowadays. The word "woman" has had its meaning changed to mean anyone, female/male is a clear biological term.

XenoBitch · 28/05/2022 22:24

I hear someone use "female", and I think of Friday Night Dinner.

Ca55andraMortmain · 28/05/2022 22:43

My in-laws do this and I find it so weird. They'll say things like 'i stopped to help someone whose tyre had burst. The female was really panicking' or 'yeah we had two waiters, the chap was a bit off but the female was lovely'. They never say 'male' when they're referring to a man. I always think it sounds like they're talking about animals and it really grates on me!

HorseGallopingOnATomato · 29/05/2022 11:47

Just came here to see if anyone mentioned Friday Night Dinner and “females”. @XenoBitch , you didn’t disappoint!!! 😂

dubyalass · 29/05/2022 11:56

“Lovely bit of squirrel” 😂

Brogues · 29/05/2022 12:17

I’ve not watched it, maybe everyone using it has!

Because these days, man can mean anyone who identifies as a man. If I wanted to specify actual men I'd say males so there would be no confusion.
Shouldn't have to, but here we are..

WalkerWalking · 29/05/2022 12:34

It's an Americanism- they used to use this all the time in ER 25 years ago.

It's wrong though. Man is a noun, male is an adjective (that person is male. He is a man).

Dinoteeth · 29/05/2022 13:05

@WalkerWalking Without sounding sarcastic cheers for the grammar lesson. Not something that I'd thought about but it makes sense.

myammus · 29/05/2022 13:34

I don’t really see people using ‘males’ but ‘females’ is used by incels and roadmen and makes me cringe

334bu · 29/05/2022 13:52

It is used to distinguish members of the female sex from people of the male sex who identify as women.

Yeah. It sounds derogatory to me when men say it.

EmpressoftheMundane · 29/05/2022 15:30

The words men and women have been misappropriated by trans-ideology / queer theory. They don’t mean anything anymore. People have retreated to makes and females in an attempt to be clear.
