I am not surprised at the horrendous stories of police, being heavy handed, pepper spray, and not letting fans in. Disgusting. Spanish and French police are well known for it
It was truly horrendous. My DS, aged 21, was caught up in it. He got to the stadium (with a valid ticket) about 2.5 hours before kickoff, and was finally let in about 10 mins before the amended kickoff time. He said all the turnstiles were closed, they kept opening and closing, but weren't letting anyone in. Some fans didn't get in at all. No Liverpool fans that he saw were behaving badly, in fact, they were very calm in a difficult situation. And yet police were firing pepper spray and tear gas indiscriminately into a crowd that couldn't move. Children were teargassed. Locals were jumping fences, and pickpocketing fans right in front of him. It was disgusting, and I have never been more relieved than when he texted to say he was in and in his seat.
The atmosphere was awful, many fans seemed to be in shock - and not because of the game, but because of the way they had been treated.
When they left the stadium, there was no police presence, and they were attacked on their way out by local gangs. Benches and bicycles were thrown at them, and someone was pushed on to the rails at the metro station. There was blood everywhere. My DS is pretty sensible, kept his head down, and got out of there. He wore a jumper to cover up his Liverpool top, otherwise he wouldn't have been allowed out of the Metro station.
What an absolute shit show - I'm livid, and relieved he is ok. There'll be an investigation, and UEFA will make all the right noises, but nothing will change
