Do I have a high palate (pics attached)?

Hi everyone,

a health visitor has pointed out that my daughter (3 months) has a high palate.

I've just had a look at my own palate and wonder if I also have a high one and if it can be hereditary?

I'm 35 years old and nobody has ever told me I have a high palate and I have no idea what a normal palate looks like!

Sorry for the funny pics 🤣

Very difficult to see from the pics, but have you had any dental issues yourself? Assuming you are in the 2nd pic, your teeth on both sides of the mouth look close together. Do you have an over or underbite? The pic on the left has an even higher palate. I'm not a dentist, but would think dental treatment to widen this would help if its an issue at all, but ask the HV what the concerns are then speak to your dentist if worried.

I've had braces as a child, but I don't have an overbite or underbite. According to the dentist, my back teeth are really flattened, because I have a "bad bite". So sometime in the future I need surgery to build my teeth up again. Not sure if this is caused by the high palate though.

It looks very high to me, though I'm no real expert.

Your palate does look quite high.
My 13 year old has a high palette and is currently having palate expansion through an orthodontist. He has a crossbite and his jaw is slightly to the left of centre.

Im not sure if at 3 months it’s an issue. It may or may not cause any issues.

With hindsight my son had breathing issues and we twice had his adenoids removed and grommets fitted, no one at this point discussed a high palate. I think palate expansion should help make more room in the nasal cavity?!?

If in the uk most dentist won’t refer to orthodontist until all adult teeth are in but palate expansion is better done younger before the palate fuses, so it may be worth getting a private consultation much younger. There are palate expansion Facebook groups that are helpful.

I’d be more concerned at 3 months about a tongue tie. Just be aware of the high palate for now incase of breathing issues.

Just to add, as an adult it’s really difficult to expand the palate as it is fused and jaw surgery is usually required, so if your isn’t causing issues it may be best leaving it alone!
