First time car insurance

Please could I have advice about car insurance?

DD turns 17 in august. We will be buying a car for her, as she has a job and can’t reliably borrow ours.

we will probably buy a VW polo 1.2, but some of the ones I’ve seen are a 1.4, so
my first question is whether that’s likely to increase the insurance significantly?

secondly, am I right in thinking that we should purchase the car in my name, Insure myself on it, then get her a separate learner insurance like marmalade?

and then when she passes, do i
transfer ownership to her and set up
hwr own new policy?

TIA

We bought a VW Up (after DS1 passed) because it's only a 1l engine and it makes a significant difference..I have insured it in my name and he's a named driver. He will be off to uni in the autumn and can't take a car, so although he's not building a no claims, I'm not spending £1500 on insurance..more like £700 for the year (a 1.4 litre Punto was going to be £2600 to insure for a year...!). He's barely driven since he passed as he's got his head down for A levels, but DD will start driving in July, so she will have a car to practise in.

Marmalade does seem to be the way to go for learner insurance and is what we will do for DD.

You can easily find what insurance group cars are in online and base your decision off that, not sure what group a polo is in but I chose a Citroen c1 for this reason.

So once you know what insurance group, does that give you a rough idea of the cost?

I've just had a quick look at insurance groups, lots of the 1L polo's are group 1 (cheapest) moving up to group 4 for a 1.2 and then obviously higher for a 1.4 so yes engine size definitely counts.

Dc1 has just bought first car (as have a few of Dc1 friends). The difference in cost for smaller engines was significant. Also they all seem to have gone for Hastings car insurance with an app that assesses your driving for dc I think it was £400 cheaper than next nearest quote.

Learner insurance is fairly cheap, I had it and I had a galaxy Smax, was in my name and was a pretty big car, used to cost me 79 a month. This was last august
Now I am fully insured on my own car. Corsa 1.6 and that costs me 170 a month with a black box (no restrictions though)

Hope this helps

You really need a 1l to keep the insurance cost anything close to reasonable! A 1.4 polo will cost thousands for a 17 year old

So once you know what insurance group, does that give you a rough idea of the cost?

Not particularly as there are so many other variables but gives a better idea of which car to look for, if you find a car on somewhere like auto trader you can put the reg into a comparison site and get a quote.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 28/05/2022 16:31

Oh and Admiral are good for insuring youngsters, both my kids have their cars insured with them

TuTuLemon · 28/05/2022 16:31

Also don't be put off thinking 1L isn't powerful, they are very nippy these days!!

Maltester71 · 28/05/2022 16:33

Great advice thanks everyone.

definitely not a 1.4 then

Im thinking a 1.0 will be massively underpowered and she won’t get many years out of it, she’ll want something more nippy?

Ha I definitely suggest you test drive a 1L for her and see how it feels, lots are much better these days.
