If you have had bunion surgery please tell me how long you were on crutches and was it very painful post surgery?

I had keyhole surgery and I didn't need painkillers after 24 hours and I'm a real wimp with pain. I only used crutches for the first week, or just to signify to people to give me a wide berth.
The walking in the first week was painful, you make yourself get up for a few minutes every hour, think kettle on, go to the loo, make tea, go and put your feet up again. I took most of a month to be up and about again and needed a couple of physio sessions to correct my walking posture. In total it took me about three months to be totally back to normal.
I'm ten years on now and my feet never hurt . They get tired if I've been on them all day, but they don't hurt. Wish I hadn't waited until I was 55 to have then done.
Good luck with your surgery, you'll be so pleased when it's done.

Try this blog, it's really honest and gives a good idea of the surgery and recovery beyondbunions.blogspot.com/?m=1

I had it 03/2020 in March.
No crutches, I got a special shoe (picture) that kept things in position and made it impossible to accidentally put weight on the foot. So I could walk from the start.
It was not really painful either.
My OP was at 6pm, they kept me in a day to make sure I see physio and learn how to use the shoe and check the stitches and change my bandages.
BUT: feet tend to swell, so it was recommended to keep the foot mostly above heart hight for six weeks (I got a sick note) to avoid problems later on and I got lots of exercises for my foot.
Today I can walk, wear normal shoes (no heels though) and the scars are almost invisible.
I took pictures for my sister as she needs the OP, too.

I had "Chevron" bunion surgery on 23rd November 2021 - I had a very boring week in bed with masses of painkillers, ice packs and anti-inflammatories. DO NOT try to skip this part! Elevate, rest, ice.

I had a checkup after a week, stitches out after 2 and all clear after 6 weeks. I'm now 6 months on and my foot is still a bit swollen but no pain. It's a long process.

Yes, there was pain and there was swelling for ages, and my best advice is not to be too impatient to get better soon and if you drive and they tell you not to drive for something weeks, obey them. Yes, I was anxious to get driving again so I pushed it a bit and even on a country road an animal can jump out and although you know you shouldn't do it you automatically stamp your foot on the brake. Do I regret having it done? Not one bit. Good luck.

I desperately need mine doing but I need more done than my bunions, I have severely flat feet & a couple of my toes are curling up as well. I'm still trying to pluck up courage to ask about seeing someone to discuss having it all sorted. Do they do one foot at a time or both? I can remember my mum's friend having hers done years ago & she was in pot for ages.

Seems like recovery is way better than it used to be. Mine are starting to hurt now so surgery at some point likely

AllLopsided · 06/06/2022 00:30

@Nat6999 I had a calcaneal osteotomy for a flat foot after an injury. It's pretty painful surgery and most surgeons will want you in a cast NWB for 6 weeks. (Mine actually didn't but i had complications as a result, so I would go for the cast!) So unlike bunion surgery alone I would think they'd do one foot at a time.
