Would you do this with a chicken?

One of those ready cooked, hot supermarket chickens.

Would you buy one then let it cool, fridge it and then use it for salads over the next 3-4 days? Maybe even reheat it in the microwave

DH thinks it will be fine but Something makes me think this is a Very Bad Idea but I can't put my finger on why.

Cooked chicken is fine in the fridge once cooked enough for 3 days and it’s fine to reheat once as well.

TheGriffle · 27/05/2022 21:04

*cooled enough

Littlepond · 27/05/2022 21:09

I wouldn't reheat it but I'd def eat it cold over a few days

I can't give them more than the next day. Gets portioned up and frozen. But it's fine in the fridge for a bit. I probably wouldn't reheat though, it's not the same in a microwave.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/05/2022 21:12

If it’s cooked, yes. Would give it to adults/10s plus. Would maybe be a bit more cautious with little ones.

(59, kids 27 and 19, survived so far).

Workinghardeveryday · 27/05/2022 21:13

fone in fridge for 24-48 hours. Wouldn’t reheat unless in a sauce though..

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 27/05/2022 21:13

Yeah, of course. No different to you cooking one at home and letting it go cold.

summer712 · 27/05/2022 21:16

Yes I do this all the time. I usually pressure cook the chicken myself though then crisp it up in the air fryer.

I use the breasts for a roast dinner. Thighs, drumsticks and whatever else for sandwiches, stir fry or a a pie. There are only three of us though.
It
I do save the stock from the pressure cooking. To be honest I have about six stocks in the freezer I haven't made anything with them yet.

SmugOldBag · 27/05/2022 21:53

Oh well this is good. It's a very easy way to make weekday lunch salads.

I was worried that the fact it was kept warm for x hours in the shop would somehow imbue it with a deathly bacteria! If it wasn't eaten immediately!

Ginandslippers · 27/05/2022 21:55

Only ever the next day. We'd eat it all by the 2nd day anyway so it wouldn't be an issue!

barneymcgroo · 27/05/2022 22:02

Danger zone for all those sorts of bacteria is 5c-63c. The chicken will be kept above that, or if below that then will be for a limited time. There are rules.
The bacteria are killed in the cooking process. If it's a supermarket, they will have to probe it to check it's cooked.

It's perfectly safe to take home, allow to cool properly, then store correctly in the fridge or freezer. You can treat it as you would a roast chicken that you did yourself. Safe to reheat, or to eat cold. (Though best eaten IMMEDIATELY, as they're properly moreish when they're still warm...)

How big is it if you think it will last 3+ days. Or perhaps there just the two of you.

shinynewapple22 · 27/05/2022 22:10

If you don't actually want to eat the chicken hot - why don't you buy a ready cooked chicken from the chiller cabinet ? These are perfectly safe for reheating and have heating instructions on the packet , otherwise useful for eating in salads, sandwiches or cooked meals such as pasta or risotto.

Genuine question-
what difference do you feel the sauce makes?

I'm in Nz. They have the hot cooked ones but not the cold cooked ones here. No idea why not!

I wouldn't and I'm usually quite relaxed about these things. I would eat it the next day if it had been kept in the fridge or reheated well. For me the issue is that you don't know how long it was kept warm before being sold

SD1978 · 28/05/2022 01:52

Do this regularly and not dead. Usually warm chicken salad day one, then in the fridge, chicken, pesto and broccoli pasta day two, chicken pie day three and four, bones cooked for soup day 5. With a sneaky sandwich here and there (using the chicken for one- not claiming magic MN chicken that can feed a family of 5 for 6 days)!!!!!'nnnnn

LostInTheColonies · 28/05/2022 02:00

I'd use some immediately, strip it completely as soon as It is cool enough - much easier. Great for sandwiches, risotto, pasta bake etc. over the next few days. Yum.

garlictwist · 28/05/2022 04:05

Why don't you just buy a pack of cold cooked chicken pieces and use that?

Furrbabymama87 · 28/05/2022 04:17

No, usually says on the pack to eat it that day.
