Help! I’ve somehow become addicted to Tatler magazine

And I’m not entirely sure how or why. I’ve always been vaguely aware it existed and that it was full of posh people and the stuff that posh people buy. A few months ago I randomly bought a copy - I’m sick of reading everything on a screen and wanted a physical magazine so thought I’d give it a go as nothing else particularly appealed.

And my god - it’s so bad it’s good. There are some articles I thought must be a parody, but no they’re genuine (I think!). There’s endless photos of near identical well-preserved blonde women wearing tweed and watching some horsey event or at a party in Knightsbridge. And 6 page articles on a minor aristocratic I’ve never heard of but somehow end up reading anyway.

It’s like being some kind of weird anthropological voyeur, spying on a species I vaguely knew existed but never really thought about in much detail.

And the thing that’s made me realise I am addicted is that reading the latest issue I’m starting to recognise the people featured in it. I find myself thinking “Oh yes that’s Alice whatsername who was waffling on about her floristry business” or “Oh she must be the sister of Olivia who was featured last month”.

How has this happened? I’m a left wing republican who would abolish public schools given half a chance. Why am I spending time reading about Lady Featherington-Hawe’s interior design exploits. And looking at unwearable jewellery that costs £10,000.

So is it just me, or are there any other secret Tatler addicts out there in mumsnet land?

I stayed in a holiday cottage last summer that had loads of back issues of Tatler. I spent the week poring over them at the breakfast table. The few-years-out-of-date factor just added to the joy. Broke the habit when I got home though, my magazine budget doesn’t stretch beyond DD’s CBeebies mags!

Kittykatmacbill · 27/05/2022 20:09

Yes! I used to be like this, I would probably only buy it twice a year when going on pre kids holidays…. It’s amazing isn’t really detailed articles about people you have never heard of, Some random well written articles about something interesting. And then ads / reviews / pictures of jewellery, furniture, clothes I can never even dream of affording it allows you to have a good guilt free dream. A normal magazine where you could maybe buy some of the things is not the same…
i wonder if there is a jubilee special, we aren’t going away on the long weekend so maybe I can pretend to be on holiday…

I used to see it in a waiting room somewhere as a young teen. It's another world.

toastedcat · 27/05/2022 21:04

It's fantastic! I actually subscribed to it for a year once a few years ago, I love the tongue in cheek articles. I think it's very self aware.

BuenaVistaAntisocialClub · 27/05/2022 21:15

Oh god yes - the names! There was a triple barrelled family in one of the issues. I didn’t even know that was a thing.

@BobbinHood if you have a library card you can read for free on the Libby app

ScootsMcHoy · 27/05/2022 21:33

I really want to read it now!

BangingOn · 27/05/2022 21:41

I love Tatler. I have subscribed a few times when there were good deals with lovely freebies and it’s definitely become my guilty pleasure.

Pedallleur · 27/05/2022 22:16

Used to read it. Amelia Farquar Hythe marrying Capt Simon Leopold of the Grenadier Guards or just looking at wealthy perma tanned people whose lives were secure and children like something from a catalogue. Dont foget the debs and 'the season' Didn't Ben Foyle wangle a job on Tatler? Country Life is similar but throw in crazy properties. Once read Roger Taylor of Queen bought his houses after seeing them in CL

Despinetta · 27/05/2022 22:22

There is definitely a parody aspect to Tatler, or perhaps simultaneously parody and not. I remember reading something by AA Gill (who started his career there) about how all the writers would compete to make up the most stupid, ridiculous idea to announce as the latest smart thing.

watcherintherye · 27/05/2022 22:28

Well, I’m not addicted yet, due to never having picked up a copy, but by the sound of it, would only be a matter of time! Do you think Waitrose stock it? Cholmondeley-Smythes, here I come!

Pedallleur · 27/05/2022 22:35

Definitely Waitrose. But also WH Smith. I used to look at the pics of the gala dinners, fundraisers etc and think how the people's lives were just golden. Yes, I know comparison is the thief etc. But it really did seem prep to public school, posh uni, marry an officer/hedge fund manager/barrister ad infinitum.

Does anyone on this thread have the new issue with the Queen on the front. Am thinking of treating my mum to a copy as she loves the Royals How big is the spread and the stuff about the Queen inside. Cant flick through it in the shops as its in a pack with a wedding guide. Thanks.

balalake · 03/06/2022 07:58

I think cold turkey may be the only option.

clockbuscanada · 03/06/2022 08:18

I have a very old copy somewhere from when I used to work with a HNW family and an errant STBXW was profiled (kindly, I admired her) in it. It's pure escapism for me, and the writing is fun, but there's definitely a tipping point where too much of it does make me cross.

mmmmmmghturep · 03/06/2022 18:21

Got some decent free sunglasses from them last year with the Prince Philip tribute issue.
