RYANAIR

I’m flying with Ryanair next week, I’ve opted for for luggage that fits under seat just for the weekend. Question being, if I’m checking in on line, & heading straight through security where is the luggage observed? Am I being daft in thinking nobody’s going to check what I’ve got?

It'll go through the scanner at security

Sorry, I meant weight/size wise?

They quite often have a thing at the gate that they check it fits in and if not then you have to pay for it...

Yep. I think it’ll be checked at the gate.

Okay, thanks. that makes sense.
never flown Ryanair before.

Yes it'll be checked at the gate. The max dimensions will be online, make sure you're within them or you'll be paying a hell of a lot to put a small bag in the hold.

Thank you, does that mean I f I buy (ahem, Gin) in duty free I’ve got to squeeze that into my existing tiny bag too, or will that be excused….

Anything you buy at duty free you can carry on extra, it doesn't have to fit in your case!

But check and double check that your suitcase is the proper size, including wheels. I've seen so many people get stung at the gate with higher charges than it would've been to put a big bag in the hold.

nearlyspringyay · 27/05/2022 18:15

Oh they will check at the gate and you can't be a mm or gram over.

Brilliant! 👊

If you mean the bag that comes with every booking then be aware that they are very strict on measurements for those as lots of people don't pay for a larger carry on bag but take an underseat bag that is the same dimensions as the paid for one.

JudgeRindersMinder · 27/05/2022 18:17

I flew with Ryanair a couple of weeks ago and they didn’t check any hand luggage sizes, and the flights were fairly busy

Easyjet on the other hand, have a box thing that your bag’s supposed to be able to fit into

Ryanair official policy on shopping bags:

"Ryanair's one bag carry-on luggage policy does not prevent or prohibit passengers purchasing airport shopping, but this shopping must fit inside the one generous piece of carry-on luggage within Ryanair's dimensions."

cluecu · 27/05/2022 18:22

We flew with Ryanair last week. We took soft rucksacks that were a bit over the dimensions, that fit under seat and hoped for the best and many others had similar, no-one batted an eyelid.

Appreciate some flights might be stricter but it worked out well for us. Obv for solid small cases it might be different.

Oh believe me - RyanAir are notoriously strict and will ‘fine’ you should you go an inch over - ie make you lay for it to be checked in. It’s a way to generate revenue when selling seats at £3 each.

Theres a certain type of RyanAir traveller who games the system who wears pretty much their entire wardrobe for the flight (and then disrobes when on board)

PAFMO · 27/05/2022 18:37

I know!
I chuckled at that too.

FoodieToo · 27/05/2022 19:33

I have flown with them 6 times in the last few months and not once was my bag checked. Haven't seen them do that for ages !
As long as it fits under the seat it's grand but nobody was checking so you could stick it in the overhead if the flight wasn't too busy .

Billandben444 · 27/05/2022 19:42

Make it a squishy bag/backpack and then if you are checked it's more likely to fit their sizer. If not, take something out and wear it. I've never had my under-seat bag checked but then I don't take the piss with its size.

I have flown Ryanair several times a year for the past decade and have never had my bag so much as glanced at.

It would be hugely inefficient for them to check every rucksack - which costs them more in gate time than fuel.

balalake · 27/05/2022 20:36

Assume it will be checked.

EileenGC · 27/05/2022 20:37

They don't check each bag individually, of course there's no time for that. The boarding queue is already split in two - priority and non-priority boarding. You will be in the non-priority boarding where they do check visually that nobody is carrying a wheelie suitcase. I very much doubt they'll make every single person put their rucksack / gym-sized bag into the little box at the gate. Some airports don't even have them anymore.

I take 10-15 Ryanair flights each year. They visually check on most flights, but very rarely do they ask you to squeeze luggage into the boxes. My rucksack is always over the size limit and not once have I been questioned. It also depends a bit on luck. Some people in front or behind me have been made to pay.

Duty free bags are allowed on top of your normal allowance. Print it off the airport's website to show if they ask. They can't refuse to let you board with it for free.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 27/05/2022 20:38

They check the wheely bags- I don't think they check backpack types

eurochick · 28/05/2022 13:29

I used to fly a lot and they do sometimes check every bag.

The underseat allowance is tiny. Can you really manage with that?
