Smelly people

I work in a shop and it's surprising how many extremely smelly people walk about. Now I dont mean people that have called in after the gym/run etc I'm talking really, really bad pissy unwashed clothes that absolutely reeeeeek of some kind of putrid smell, perhaps unwashed for an extremely long time. Now, Whilst I know everyone has different circumstances etc but I was really shocked to learn that one of the long term (smelly) shoppers actually has a very glamorous daughter and it stunned me to the core that she would let her dad out knowing he smelt so completely terrible.
Surly most people know that if you don't wash both yourself and your clothes you will eventually smell? Why someone would allow a friend or family to go out like this is extremely cruel in my opinion.

I also saw an advert for 72 hour deodorant. I was Confused.

cushioncovers · 27/05/2022 21:36

And I'm 52 and grew up in the 70's and we certainly washed everyday and bathed several times a week as kids and my parents bathed or showered daily. So did everyone else we knew. We shared bath water but there wasn't any of this only washing once a week business. Maybe in the 50's and 60's people bathed less often.

PuppyMonkey · 27/05/2022 21:44

MN smelly people threads really are a genre. Grin

Well I don’t wear deodorant. When my mum got diagnosed with breast cancer, they told her to stop wearing it. So I figure, why would I spray this shite onto a sensitive area? If I smell a bit, well fuckit.

I also don't wear deodorant, but I'm blessed to be born with the korean ABCC11 gene which means I don't get BO. I'd obviously still smell if I didn't wash, but I don't get BO or sweat much at all really.

Fizbosshoes · 27/05/2022 22:05

@Gannon
But daily washing is not obsessive hygiene lmao.
Agree. As I mentioned, a lot of MN think anything less than 2 or 3 showers a day is insufficient while others would find one shower a day , or even <whispers> a wash, to be enough.

Thebeastofsleep · 27/05/2022 22:07

Jaikers · 27/05/2022 19:04

It’s not always poor hygiene. My poor dd has really bad BO and has done from a very young age. She showers every morning using medicated soap, uses a max strength anti perspirant and wears clean clothes every day but within a few hours she smells awful. I’m not sure she herself is aware of how strong she smells though because when I suggest she has a wash throughout the day she gets really offended and upset

It's literally genetic.

BO is on a scale and no matter how much you wash, or how little you wash, you'll fall within you genetic parameters.

People can smell due to their things though, usually environmental, particularly food and laundry, occasionally illness. I can smell diabetics pretty well (have a number in my friends and family), it's not an unpleasant smell, just a distinct one. I'm a genetic 'super smeller' though!

What makes me quite sad about this thread is that I have suffered a prolapsed bladder and have had to have specialist physio for a damaged sphincter. Thanks crap midwives.

I have to pay a little more attention than I did 40 years ago but I do not chuffing well smell. I deal with it and have too much pride.

Lovinglife45 · 27/05/2022 22:19

I think some people have lower standards. I can tell when commuters have not showered the night before or in the morning. They smell muggy, sweaty and stale.

Five or six years ago, we took an early morning flight to Spain. It was clear most passengers, a mixture of adults and children simply got up and got dressed.

Another thing that gets me is parents who do not wash their toddlers and young children daily morning and night often wrongly assuming as they are small they need to be bathed less. I am often gagging when walking behind some children on the school run.

Lovemusic33 · 27/05/2022 22:21

So you work in my local Poundland? 😬, I can’t go in there as I always seem to come across smelly people. I have a over sensitive nose, I don’t go around sniffing people but for some reason Poundland always has someone smelly in there when I have been in. I think people be lame nose blind to their own smell, I have 2 teenagers that don’t seem to notice when they smell. People that smoke, have pets the smell of damp in their homes become used to it. I know when I had a dog I couldn’t smell it unless we went away for a few days and then returned, I could then smell it.

ICannotRememberAThing · 27/05/2022 22:26

I had Covid recently and whilst I could taste, weirdly, I lost most of my sense of smell.
I know that if I don't shower every day I smell. During the few weeks with covid I could barely smell anything let alone myself. I think some people just don't have a good sense of smell generally and are completely unaware that they stink.

BertieBotts · 27/05/2022 22:36

What, you actually gag at the smell of small children? Hmm It must be a terrible burden to go through life with such a sensitive nose. I've literally never come across a small child who smells of anything unpleasant, except occasionally chip fat, cigarette smoke or farts. None of which are anything to do with frequency of bathing.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/05/2022 22:37

@Lovinglife45 I can't imagine where you must live. I have never ever smelt children when walking behind them on the school run.

mammagotmad · 27/05/2022 22:45

@verySMELLYpissyPERSON I seem to have struck a nerve with you, so I must apologise to you, however I must point out that I never once in my post said that people that smelt were 'useless and worthless' or what ever words it was that you used. I'm now we'll clued in that some People struggle with hygiene when experiencing bouts of depression and to those people, of course I realise it's an extremely difficult time, and of course i had explained in my post that I understand that people have different circumstances etc. However not every person that smells falls into this category and it's these people I'm referring to. Not trying to be rude but im pointing out the facts that SOME people are just lazy/ don't care and that's fair enough.

Prometheus · 27/05/2022 22:46

I have an extremely sensitive sense of smell. If I close my eyes I can tell which of my children or friends is stood in front of me due to smell. I still have a memory of the different smells of my primary school friends 40 years ago. To me, skin and hair smells strongly and I can pick out different odours. I find this difficult in my day to day life as I often have to mask my reactions to people - for example I manage a young woman who smells very strongly of grease. It makes me feel sick but I would never let her know as she is a grown woman and must surely smell it herself or have a friend who would tell her.

Prometheus · 27/05/2022 22:50

I’ve not RTFT but just saw references to children. They smell sooo strongly! I remember being at sixth form college back in 1998 and returning to the classroom after going to the loo. I walked in and said ‘oh my god it smells of children in here’ Everyone through I was a witch as another teacher had just bought her primary aged kids into the classroom briefly then left before I arrived. I could smell them so strongly. Same smell as my kids now - it’s kind of like an outdoor, ozone smell.

I think you are a witch too, I have never noticed children having a general smell about them

Well aren't you just a ray of fucking sunshine.
Some people cannot dry their clothes properly. Or have always dried their clothes on a radiator.
This will obviously get much worse now fuel bills just doubled.
Maybe you just had an empathy bypass today?

Either you suffered a NC fail or didn't understand the 1st bit of my message.

I wasn't replying to anything your username said. I very clearly said I was replying to the OP's opening post and her response to another poster.

Kids definitely have a smell. As do schools. My kids have a smell, it's different to other people's kids smell, which are all unique. But kids don't smell like adults. Like baby's have the new baby head smell (which is actually the smell of their mothers insides for a few weeks until it's the smell of milk, whatever source that comes from). Just because something has a smell doesn't mean it's a bad smell (though some are).

onlythreenow · 27/05/2022 23:35

I don’t get it either. That low-level clothes dried on a radiator smell makes me gag and yet I’ve seen perfectly well dressed and professional looking people stink of it. Dry your clothes properly you mingers!

I don't get how clothes dried on a radiator smell any different to clothes dried any other way. Maybe not the same as clothes dried outside, but how would they have a smell?

Oh they do! Almost like biscuits. I quite like radiator dried smell. Tumble dryer smell I'm not keen on but line dried I hate- smells like cut grass, which I don't like. If you don't air your house and dry loads of washing on radiators it can take on a damp odour though .

Absolute rubbish. Also, how do you know that anyone you can smell has not showered the night before or in the morning as opposed to not having showered for a week? You are being unpleasant and judgemental.
