How often do you buy clothes?

Just that really? I feel like I hardly ever do - everyone else seems so fashionable. What do you buy and how often and where do you shop.

I buy bit and pieces every few weeks just because I enjoy shopping and having a look round but I only buy basic things and usually only from tesco/ primark etc I'm absolutely definitely not a trend setter, I just like to be comfortable and have some nice new T-shirts to wear

ifonly4 · 27/05/2022 10:20

I buy far less than I used to. This year I've bought two t-shirts, one pair of cropped summer trousers (would buy another pair if I could find them as my others have holes in them!). If I can find any that fit at a low(ish) price, I'd like to buy a couple of pairs of jeans for the winter - had all mine years and they're starting to fray at knees. That'll probably be it this year.

Chishnfips · 27/05/2022 10:21

A couple of times a year I'll replace a few items that have worn out. I almost always buy second hand apart from underwear and tights.

Now I am retired almost never. When I was working I used to go clothes shopping twice a year. I don’t like shopping at all. I tend to buy quite expensive stuff that lasts.

The last clothes shopping I did was in August 2019. I was going overseas to a family wedding in September, It was a three day traditional Chinese wedding so I needed three complete outfits. I spent a lot of money.

Some of my stuff is wearing out so I would actually like to buy some new stuff but what the hell is going on with summer dresses it’s gone all puffy milkmaid made from curtains from the 1970’s.

When I need them; so this year I have bought a dress, a pair of sandals and a pair of shoes .Last year I bought loads , for me, a coat, a bag, 4 dresses , cardigan, 3 bras and 6 pairs of pants.I had some occasions to go to and a holiday .I don't particularly skimp when I buy things and I expect them to last until they wear out or I am too fat to wear them.Even then, ever the optimist , I hang them up in the wardrobe!

Purplehonesty2 · 27/05/2022 11:31

Maybe one big item every few months? But it would tend to be a splurge so dubarry boots or fairfax and favour trainers

Then jeans, tops etc maybe a 2/3 times a year.

So not very much!!

JustFrustrated · 27/05/2022 11:45

More often than I should. But I can afford to and enjoy it.

The kids get kitted out as and when they need, so for the teenager it seems like it's every flipping week.

I usually buy something once a month.

Especially bras. Im desperately trying to find a bra that fits well, is comfortable, not ugly and no festooned with lace/extra bits.

Ladies, having a boob job is all well and good, but trying to find a decent bra after isn't. Wish I'd listened to my sister 🤣🤣

EcoEcoIA · 27/05/2022 11:58

The last time I bought clothes was two years ago, and then second hand from ebay and charity shops. The fashion industry is con to make us buy stuff we don't need.

CrunchyCarrot · 27/05/2022 12:01

A couple of times a year, max. I am house bound so don't really need a lot of variety. I still wear clothes that are 10-20 years old! Sometimes I just get tired of the same old so buy a couple of new things and send the old ones to recycling. I am pretty fussy with what I buy as I prefer natural fabrics.

Passanotherjaffacake · 27/05/2022 12:21

Usually once or twice a year - I buy good secondhand stuff on eBay or I like fat face, mint velvet and hush. Late thirties though and IVF and pregnancy has not been kind 😂. I get less joy from clothes shopping now I guess.

Second the pp who mentioned that less formal/workwear has reduced my outlay. Can just wear a nice day dress to work now.

Have found that not ‘going shopping’ as an activity has really reduced my spending. When we do ‘go shopping’ it’s usually for stuff for DD or the house so never feel like spending a few hours browsing and trying on for me with my little family in tow.

Lacedwithgrace · 27/05/2022 12:43

Most weeks. Usually from charity shops. I like to rotate my clothing seasonally and love clothes shopping

uncomfortablydumb53 · 27/05/2022 12:49

I buy all my tops pre owned on eBay for budgetary and environmental reasons, so perhaps one per month if I see something from favourite brand( Brakeburn)
I have gradually replaced older clothes, on a one out, one in basis
I probably buy new jeans 2 yearly as I'm petite length

Charnos Everyday?

Ohhhh thank you!

mackthepony · 27/05/2022 17:55

I have honestly stopped shopping. I have a TON of clothes, it's not even funny.

Really reined it in since covid tbh

BooksAndChooks · 27/05/2022 21:04

Where do you get your petite jeans from? I'm always on the search for something petite, high quality and flattering.

Badger1970 · 27/05/2022 21:07

I buy something most weeks! I love clothes. But I am trying to make a conscious effort to buy less and better quality. I've got a wardrobe full of Joe Brown tops that look like washed out rags after 6 wears...... so I need to have a big sort out.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 27/05/2022 22:25

@BooksAndChooks
I'm 57 and unlikely as it sounds, Hollister( high rise Skinny) fit me perfectly.

Lovinglife45 · 28/05/2022 00:54

Previously I would buy several inexpensive items each month - no more than £50/£60 a month. The last item I bought was in March.

I am trying a no spend rule for the remainder of the year unless it is a replacement item. Whilst I do not have three double wardrobes, I own enough clothes and footwear. Some span four or five years and are still in good condition.

I enjoy browsing high end clothing websites and adding to the basket what I would buy if I had the budget.

Bloodybridget · 28/05/2022 01:15

I'm trying to remember what I've bought this year. Winter walking trousers to replace ones that were hopelessly big (illness over past three years has left me much smaller); a warm top towards the end of a holiday when all my other clothes were filthy and we were due to stay one night in a posh hotel! Two pairs of shoes, badly needed, and a £3 pack of trainer socks from Matalan. I think that's it. Oh and one warm vest, also a necessity on holiday. I don't like having too many clothes.
