How much do you remember from your childhood?

I'm just wondering if I am abnormal. Obviously my parents I remember quite a lot about, not the day to day stuff, just random isolated moments. The thing is I, have 4 sisters and tbh remember very very little about them from before about 10. Pretty sparsely after that, my next oldest sister was 7 years older than me, so I do remember little things about her living at home.

The first memory of even her was when I was about 7.

More than I want too unfortunately.

Very little.

maybe half a dozen memories of childhood -right up until the end of high school. It’s weird. If I look at photos it can spark a memory of “oh, I remember when…” but I can’t even remember much about uni, jobs, dating DH etc.
my head is more filled with all the memories of my DS’s early years and the happy memories from him being small (instead of the grumpy older teen he is right now) and the day to day stresses of work.
it’s something I’m quite sad about.

I remember very little of childhood. I seem to remember places and being in the car rather than wherever we were going. I remember being smacked and my brother being really nasty. A few glimpses of opening Christmas presents and school friends and teachers. Photos help to spark memories, do you have many op? Being a child of the 70s and 80s I have very few.

Tbh I forget recent things too. Social media and camera roll can help. More recent generations will remember more as so much is documented now.

I remember hardly anything. I just remember being happy and not really having any problems. but I don't remember much detail or much specifically. I've been reminded of a lot from my mum and my brothers but don't actually remember that much myself. but I just don't see that as a problem.

ouch321 · 26/05/2022 15:34

Bits and pieces.

I am not sure how memory works- I know there is long and short term but other than that don't know.

Sometimes a memory can randomly be triggered by something.

Eg a poster last week put up a picture in a thread of a character in a kiddie tv show. I had had no memory of said show until I saw that pic but the pic was a trigger for the memory to come to life so to speak.

I'm sure it would be fascinating to study memory...

Me too, in minute detail.

ladytessa · 26/05/2022 15:45

Everything!

simbobs · 26/05/2022 15:45

I can remember lots, even a few things from when I was 3, nearly 4. I would have thought it unusual not to remember things that happened before you were 10, but I may be wrong.

SuspiciousBanana · 26/05/2022 15:46

I was really badly bullied and very unhappy and unfortunately I only really hold sad memories that go with that. I don’t know how I tolerated it!

MargaretThursday · 26/05/2022 15:52

I think it depends on you what you remember.

I have very clear memories, including how I felt, thought, reasoning I did, smells etc from about 2yo upwards. Those early memories are so strong that I would think I was older except I can date them (eg like when I was in hospital).

Dh remembers very little from before secondary school.

We both had happy childhoods so no repressing memories or trauma.

MardyOldGoth · 26/05/2022 16:02

Only bits really up to the age of about 8. After that there's a lot more. I remember my mid to late-teens very clearly, probably better than I remember my 20s and 30s.

CoralBells · 26/05/2022 16:05

I remember loads from a very young age. My sister remembers very little.

Retrievemysanity · 26/05/2022 16:07

A few bits from my first primary school (we moved when I was 7) and then a bit more from my second primary school. Much more from age 10 plus. I had a younger brother and I don’t remember much of him in primary years, much more secondary onwards.

Playplayaway · 26/05/2022 16:09

Smells trigger memories just as a photograph and I've often been reduced to tears by getting a whiff of cut grass, a floral scent or a certain washing powder. Deep down memories of my lovely mum, nothing in particular but just feeling safe at that point in time.

eddiemairswife · 26/05/2022 16:10

I can remember from just before my 3rd birthday. I was stung by a wasp which had crawled down the neck of my dress. As my birthday is in October it must have happened late Aug/early Sept. We were evacuated shortly after and never returned to that house. I think if you have moved around and events which can be dated have occurred it aids with memories.

Bigpinkslippers · 26/05/2022 16:10

Loads from around 2 1/2 onwards, but from conversations with family & friends this does seem to be unusual

Dougieowner · 26/05/2022 16:13

I have huge recall from wayyyy back to when I was very small. Not relying on photos to stir a memory, I can just recall home life, holidays, school etc.
If I see a particular photo or go to a place I have been before (even 50-years ago) then I can recall specific memories.
Perhaps I am unusual but I feel very glad about it, my childhood was generally very happy and I enjoy being able to remember it in detail, especially as some of the people I shared it with are no-longer here.

balalake · 26/05/2022 16:32

I remember a few things from the house we lived in until I was aged 4. Never been back to the area so it's not interpreting recent memories.

TheNoodlesIncident · 26/05/2022 16:35

I remember loads too. Some are happy and contented, like playing games with brother and sister, others less pleasant. A lot of it is very everyday, mundane stuff and I've no idea why I would remember it. I remember us all in car going somewhere remote and the driver stopped the car, got out and went in front to take a photograph. Looking at that photo is odd as I can see myself in the car and what I was doing and remember clearly being there and looking out. It is an odd feeling, that photo...

I remember dreams I had when I was about five onwards too. I'm over 50 now. A lot of my twenties is a lot vaguer than my childhood, which seems to have stuck more.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 26/05/2022 16:38

Very little thanks to childhood trauma.

My therapist assured me that it’s a normal coping mechanism whereby you disassociate so you don’t crack under the stress. Best let sleeping dogs lie was the advice as it serves a purpose.

DrBrennerFan · 26/05/2022 16:39

I’d like most of my life wiped please especially childhood teen 20s, 30. 40 hard work but better times.

Fluffruff · 26/05/2022 16:39

I think I can remember a lot. One of my first memories is arriving age 3-4 in the country my parents moved to. It was very hot and I clearly remember the hot and humid air outside and stepping into our new house, it was night time and dark but air conditioned so very cold inside. I remember a lot from primary school, the layout of the school and classrooms, layout of my friends houses etc.

elp30 · 26/05/2022 16:42

All four of my grandparents and my mother died by the time I was 10-years-old. I do everything I can to remember my childhood so I don't forget them.

My earliest memory is at age four but it seems very far away. I remember random events around age five, like starting school and the names of a few of my classmates and weirdly, school lunches and lessons. I remember daily life better starting at age six.

I'm 51 now so I'm impressed that I can remember so much but trying to remember things now is far more difficult for me!

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 26/05/2022 16:45

I can remember having my nappy changed, and my mum asking my sister to get her the nappy cream.
I can also remember lying in my pram, with my sisters bf throwing a soft toy above my face, making me laugh. Couldn't have been any older than 12 mths in either memory.

IsSpringSprangedYet · 26/05/2022 16:48

I can remember snapshots of my younger childhood - the dust swirling in a ray of sun coming through our living room window, asking my mum how did clowns (clouds) move, mum playing woman in chains by tears for fears while I played with my barbie kitchen... all before I was 10. I can remember three memories of my bio dad - one of him doing an unspeakable act, when I was around three.
I can remember very brief bits of school.

Like PPs, I don't remember so much of my late teens/early 20s quite like that. I must have stopped looking I guess. And photos of my boys as babies triggers memories, but I was knackered then and still am now really so it's all harder to remember. I used to try and journal when I was younger, and I should have kept what I wrote and carried on with it. Perhaps I'll start again while they're still young.
