What does your 6/7 year old have in their lunch box, honestly?

6yo wants to start taking packed lunches and I'm a bit out of the habit so I'm just trying to get an idea of what others do.

Today he was given a tuna roll, a yoghurt, carrot sticks, an orange and a babybel.

He's a really good eater and I don't think dh thought there was enough food.

Mine have one "main" thing like a sandwich, pasta salad, sushi, couscous etc, 2 portions of fruit, 1 portion of veg, small yoghurt like a Frube and one other thing (eg few crackers or small packet of crisps). One of the pieces of fruit is for the morning snack and everything else is for lunch.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 26/05/2022 20:12

Bottle of water
Toasted pancake or brioche
Small tub of grapes / banana
Sugar free jelly
Cucumber sticks
Fromage frais pouch
Sometimes some chopped chicken or ham and babybel
Smoothies occasionally

A mix of the above depending on what's in the house and how hungry she is. She's a bit of a grazer.

springhassprung22 · 26/05/2022 20:12

Very similar to my DC in Y2 (age 7). Something bread based like a sandwich/wrap/bagel, usually Philadelphia or ham. Fruit (blueberries or grapes). Cucumber slices. Occasionally a protein snack like mini chicken fridge raider bites. Then a mini soreen loaf, and small packet of crisps.

bluechameleon · 26/05/2022 20:28

Cheese sandwich, cucumber, sometimes carrot sticks, a couple of cocktail sausages/savoury eggs/slices of chorizo, some combination of grapes/blueberries/strawberries/raspberries/satsuma/kiwi, an oat bar/couple of biscuits.

EcoCustard · 26/05/2022 20:29

Dd6 has a ham/tuna/chicken or cheese & pickle sandwich or wrap.
cheese cubes or Peperami (depends what sandwich filling is).
carrot sticks, cucumber and baby tomatoes.
pot of melon or berries
flapjack/cake
Ds7 has cream cheese/peanut butter or cheese sandwich or wrap
babybel
carrot, cucumber or olives and same as sisters.
they don’t have cake everyday it may be jelly/custard or yoghurt
I always put in fruit.

I may do a savoury muffin or scone with cooked meat or cheese and veggies with the above.
I put in a snack if at after school club.
they are both always hungry and eat everything.

OkPedro · 26/05/2022 20:35

I'm surprised how many people send crisps for lunch. My childrens school don't allow crisps and I'd class them as a treat at home (mainly so I can keep them for myself 😅)

confusedlots · 26/05/2022 20:41

I think that sounds fine! My 5 year old usually has a cheese or ham sandwich, a little pack of raisins and 2 other things, usually some cheese/sliced peppers/grapes/strawberries/cucumber etc. On Friday's she usually gets a little treat too, like a choc chip brioche or small muffin.

My 10year old is a big starvo at the min today he had

Ham roll
Banana
Chocolate crepe thingy
Ritz crackers
Winder
Pot of custard
Packet of baked crisps
2 rich tea

He is extremely tall and really skinny and ALWAYS HUNGRY

Twitterwhooooo · 26/05/2022 21:05

This might be silly question, but if children are really hungry, wouldn't it be cheaper/healthier/better for the environment/easier to give them another sandwich rather than things like Winders or pots of custard?

GreyCarpet · 26/05/2022 21:10

Honestly?

Well, Mondays would be cous cous and roasted vegetables, babybel, lovingly prepared fruit salad, homemade cheese straws and the like.

By Fridays, it was a cheese sandwich, a Penguin and an apple...

Songoftheseas · 26/05/2022 21:11

My very fussy nearly 7 year old DD has:

Ham roll
Crisps (usually Pom Bears, occasionally Hula Hoops)
Babybel cheese
Chopped fresh fruit in pot
Small sweet treat - usually two gluten free biscuits or portioned cake slice
Fruit juice carton

Blanketpolicy · 26/05/2022 21:16

YogaStar1 · 26/05/2022 11:48

@YogaStar1

It doesn't have sugar, but isnt it full of caffaine? Surely that isnt appropriate for a 6/7 year old?

Redbluelellow · 26/05/2022 21:18

Today he had ham sandwich, raisins, plain crisps and an apple bar

Newforumnewname · 26/05/2022 21:19

Sandwich
Piece of fruit
packet of yoghurt raisins

Concestor · 26/05/2022 21:22

My 7yo gets:
Sandwich or wrap, crisps, chocolate bar, fruit. Most of it comes back home and is eaten in the car.
