Have you ever called in sick for lack of sleep?

I’m seriously considering it. I went to bed at my usual time of 10pm but was still awake at 12:30 and woke up at 4:30.

No but I wish I could.

TheChild · 26/05/2022 05:49

Once, when I didn't actually fall asleep at all due to anxiety. I felt absolutely appalling and would have been useless at work.

Choppies · 26/05/2022 05:50

No, even after totally sleepless nights. Caffeine will help surely?

No but I cope ok with less sleep. Can you function?

StampOnTheGround · 26/05/2022 05:55

4 hours solid sleep is definitely not a reason to

carefullycourageous · 26/05/2022 05:56

I haven't needed to but I would if necessary. Only you can tell how you feel.

You might want to say something other than tired though.

Skinnermarink · 26/05/2022 05:56

er, no, and most people an function on four hours sleep. Drink a strong coffee.

Skinnermarink · 26/05/2022 05:56

*can

MinnieMountain · 26/05/2022 05:57

Caffeine helps up to a point. I’ve slogged through on 5 hours but this feels like it’s tipped me over the edge.
It’s due to peri-menopause.

4 hours in a row should be enough to push through one day, just get an early night tonight !

MinnieMountain · 26/05/2022 05:59

I suppose I can always go in and see how it goes. Office is 10 minutes away and I have notes there from yesterday that I need to work from.

No. Four hours is about normal for a night's sleep when I'm at work. I always keep pro plus in my bag.

Then you can either say it is a menopausal issue or say you feel unwell in a generic way.

It doesn't matter what anyone else says, they are not you.

If you feel dreadful your organisation has sick leave for a reason. Other people can't make this decision for you!

AmberGer · 26/05/2022 06:02

Only when my ds was ill as a baby and I didn't sleep at all, all night, not even half an hour.
Most nights when he was little, I only used to get 4-6 hours of broken sleep and still went to work.
If you're job would be dangerously affected by lack of sleep, other people's lives at stake, you drive for a living etc. Then do not go in!
Otherwise, go in, plow on through, plenty of coffee, have an early night tonight.

GrinAndVomit · 26/05/2022 06:05

I would have done before I had kids if I hadn’t had a sick day in a really long time. Now I’m used to functioning on four hours.

If you’re awake anyway, go in and see how you feel. You might be worse off taking the day off because you might nap in the day and struggle to sleep again tonight.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 26/05/2022 06:07

Four hours is rubbish but it's a one-off and being tired isn't a reason not to go to work.

parrotonthesofa · 26/05/2022 06:07

No but I probably should have done. I went in many a time absolutely exhausted and I don't think I did a great job.

I think it depends on a) what you have to do b) how well you manage when very tired.

ChangingStates · 26/05/2022 06:10

I am on just about the same, crap night and feel tired but will go in. This happens to me fairly frequently. I try to give myself the mindset that it’s enough to get through the day, it’s just one day and being tired isn’t the end of the world.
Good luck surviving the day!

MinnieMountain · 26/05/2022 06:16

I know only I can make the decision, I was just musing and I can’t talk to DH yet as he’s asleep in a different room.

I’m a conveyancing solicitor but work in a support role, and my brain feels like mush already.

Err, no. Just push on through. It’s one night 🙄 One of my colleagues does this, we get lumbered with her work. We just think she’s lazy. Always tends to be a Monday or Friday too 🤔

Roselilly36 · 26/05/2022 07:14

No, never.

HaggisBurger · 26/05/2022 07:19

Go in, get your notes. Then wfh for the rest of the day - but get an hour’s Kip when you get back home?

Pollydonia · 26/05/2022 07:21

No but on occasion lack of sleep triggers migraines for me so I have had to leave work due to that.
I did once go in after being up all night with a poorly ddog - I got into my car at lunchtime and had half an hours sleep - could you do something like that ?

Overthebow · 26/05/2022 07:22

‘Slogged through’ on five hours?

darknessmyoldfriend · 26/05/2022 07:23

I know how you feel OP! I suppose it depends what you do for a living. If I don't get enough sleep I usually get headaches/migraines and then I have to call in sick anyway.
