HELP! Could this front itching/discomfort be worms? *shudders*

DS was in the bath tonight and suddenly started grabbing himself and sort of dragging himself about as though he was itchy or uncomfortable. I thought it could be the scented bubble bath as he has eczema and hasn’t used it before.

we gave him another bath just water incase but he carried on, putting his soft toy and blanket between his legs and saying his bum hurt even though he’s mainly holding his Willy.

I gave him piriton incase it was a skin reaction and it was itching and he went off to sleep. He’s woken up several times since whimpering and thrashing/writhing about, keeps laying on his front, seems in discomfort. Goes off to sleep and it happens over again.

I had a look for worms as two weeks ago we were with family friends who had treated one of their children for worms recently but assured us it was all fine by then. I couldn’t see anything but not sure I looked properly.
would worms make him itch/be uncomfortable around his front as well as his bum? He’s grabbing his bum occasionally but he’s mainly bothered by discomfort in or on his front. And would it just start like that in the bath?!

im a bit worried it’s a UTI, and can’t work out if the discomfort is itching or pain and will ring the doctor in the morning, but wondering whether to preserve looking if it does sound like it could be worms. Something is definitely really bothering him, it’s horrible. :(

and is there anything anyone has found to stop the itching before they could get proper medication?
I’m not sure either one of us is going to get much sleep at this rate 😭

If it is worms, they can come out for a wander & gather in warm, moist places, but they won't be inside anywhere other than someone's bum, afaik.

Reesewithafork · 26/05/2022 01:32

So could they theoretically travel?! He’s in nappies so he wouldn’t have been able to scratch IYSWIM

i put some Vaseline on and this seemed to help a bit for a while but then he wakes up again whimpering and rolling and thrashing about.

maybe it isn’t worms and is something completely different, unless he’s getting confused with where the itchy feeling or discomfort is coming from and just knows it’s the nappy area. It’s so hard as he’s talking but he’s also parroting so it’s hard to work out what is actually bothering him

I'm just going by when my little girl had them (yep, shudder!)
Some stragglers would be around her vulva at night, which caused redness and itching.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 26/05/2022 01:39

You should be able to see them if you have a look. Ugh!

Reesewithafork · 26/05/2022 06:49

I didn’t see anything when I looked last night but I’ll look again this morning when he gets up

If it's worms, look in his poo.

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/05/2022 06:59

If he is over 2 I would just treat him .Not need for proof , you can just buy treatment for DS and the family from a pharmacy. If he is under two you can't treat with medication, just practice hygiene.

Reesewithafork · 26/05/2022 07:48

He’s over two. I’ll get the medicine and call the doctor to check him out incase it’s not worms and a UTI or something

Yes they can, I remember from being a child finding one 'at the front' and wondering what it was.

My mum used to give me lemon barley water which seemed to help with the itch - I don't ever remember being treated for them but that's another story.

Reesewithafork · 26/05/2022 10:05

poor you!!! I wonder if it’s as likely with boys. He is still uncomfortable today but doesn’t seem to be as bad as it was overnight

however his nappies do seem a bit off - maybe slightly darker with a different whiff so I’ve got an appointment later on to see if I can see what’s going on!

I don’t think it’s worms, he’s in way too much discomfort at the front :(

im going to hold fire on the worms treatment incase the doctor gives him some kind of other medicine and hope we can get a clear answer later. It’s so hard when they’re this ages and can’t describe what they’re feeling properly

Came to update as I hate it when a thread is left unresolved. We took a urine sample to the doctors and it came up lots of bright colours :( doctor said pretty conclusive for a UTI but has been sent off to the hospital to confirm. Been treating with antibiotics in the meantime.
fortunately diabetes and kidney function all looked okay from the dipstick test and the agitation and “itching” has stopped since the day we went to the doctors.
we were also given thrush cream just incase there was a touch of that going on.

I didn’t realise that it was quite uncommon for boys to get UTIs, she said often it’s not realised that they’ve been having them til they’re 5 or 6 because the symptoms can be so ambiguous! He might have to have a kidney scan if hospital confirms but apparently that’s normal protocol so fingers crossed if that happens he’s all okay on that front too.

Quite dramatic!
just buy the OTC worms stuff and treat just in case

Reesewithafork · 28/05/2022 22:15

Sorry should have said, worms have been ruled out.
