Hafen y mor

DH, DD(3) and I are going to hafen y mor haven park in North Wales in July for ten days. Does anyone have recommendations for places to go/things to do while we're there. I'd always dismissed Wales as too far a drive from home (central belt, Scotland) but now very excited to see what we've been missing!

We've just come back from the Llyn Peninsula, and I have been holidaying there since I was a child. My favourite place is Porthdinllaen - it's a longish walk to get there but the views as you walk are amazing. There's a gorgeous tucked away beach by the lifeboat station and around the bay on another beach is a beach pub that was voted the third best beach bar in the world a few years ago. Abersoch for shopping, beach (surfing etc if that's your thing) and lots of places to eat. Recommend the Potted Lobster if you like seafood, and Two Islands cafe - the lime and coconut cake is yummy and good hot chocolate. Criccieth is a nice day out too, good views from the castle, fish and chips from the nearby fish shop and ice cream at Cadwaladers. Good beaches also at Llanbedrog, Aberdaron and Whistling Sands, but they are more of a drive for you. Longer drives to Carnarvon Castle, Portmeirion and Bedgelert also worthwhile.

There’s a wooden rollercoaster near Betws Y coed ( and a fab cafe in Betws itself, the alpine cafe in the station). Black rock sands is a great beach. Loads of steam trains in Blaenau Ffestiniog

My friends from Dublin went there a couple of years ago and loved the whole place, their kids were happy too so that made it! The funny thing is, with no disrespect intended to our Welsh posters here, but they and the kids pronounced it Ha Fanny More and will forever be known by that pronunciation. The word "Mor" in Irish (Gaeilge) is "Big" so everyone had a Big Fanny Ha!

Black rock llamas - have a google. We really enjoyed it and the kids said it was the best part of the holiday. (Dd aged 17 and dd aged 8 at the time).

You will love it in North Wales. Beautiful country. Went there when I was pregnant with DC1 years ago, then again when he was a baby. Stayed at a b and b just outside Caenarfon from memory. Lots of tourist attractions. Steam trains were fab.

Would go back in a heartbeat. Very kind and friendly people.

Having vague memories of visiting a zoo there too? Very hilly!

Last time I went there it was Butlins Pwllheli.
Lovely area though. Not too far is Portmeirion that's a nice day out too.

IQuiteLikeCricket · 26/05/2022 17:55

It's lovely around there. Abersoch is just around the corner and absolutely gorgeous, great beach. Portmeirion is beautiful, lovely day out there. Criccieth and Porthmadog are lovely. Caernarfon and the castle are nice.

We used to go that site when the kids were little, it's a big park, loads to explore.
