Landlines - do I still need one?

Just that really.

Will be renegotiating our TV/phone/broadband package soon and got me wondering why we still have a landline. Never use it for outbound; hardly ever rings for inbound and everywhere important outside friends/family (like the doctors and school etc) have our mobile numbers anyway. I think we kept it last time as seemed so cheap to just leave it, but still a cost I guess.

So tell me what I’m missing if I just get rid of it and save some money, albeit a small amount.

I unplugged mine years ago as the only calls we would get were scammers.

If you are a business yes you need it otherwise possibly not. I won't use a business that only has a mobile number and advise all elderly people to do the same. I have l landline and mobile on my business cards, no one ever calls the mobile. Not ever.

It's part of our package. It doesn't work though and I can't be bothered to get it looked at. The only one I've found that doesn't need one is Virgin and I'd go back to dial up before using that shambles of a company. If Sky have a cheaper package without a landline I'd switch though.

There’s a difference between cancelling your phone package and getting rid of your landline. I cancelled my phone package because like pp no-one but scam callers rang it any more. I’m with Virgin and was able to keep my decent broadband package. Saved me some money and I sold my landline phones so made some cash there too.

This is exactly why I unplugged mine too. Everyone I want to talk to rings my mobile, the only ones ringing the landline were scammers.

We haven’t had a landline phone for 15 years.

We've just got rid of ours. We could have paid extra with new provider to keep the phone number but it would have been an internet phone.

We live in inner London with good neighbours and mobile signal. I think I would have felt differently if we were more isolated or subject to power cuts etc.

We have one as it gives us a cheaper package (according to DH).

I bought a handset for it recently as it means we can leave our 8yo if one of us needs to pop out whilst the other is away.

Got rid of ours years ago. Broadband from Vodafone, so no bastard standing charge from BT.

use mine everyday, only keep mobile for emergencies when out and about.
