Spiraliser

Yeah - they've been around a while now but since deciding to eat plant based I think I need one to jazz up our meals.

I remember purchasing a cheapo handheld one a few years ago and it was rubbish.

So any tips on a great spiraliser that I will use - thank you

save your money because even the fancy one I bought ended up in the back of my cupboard.
Then DM wanted it, it ended up in the back of her cupboard.
She gave it me back. I used it a couple of times then it was back in the cupboard again.

finally sent it to the charity shop after owning it for about 5 years!

I’m veggie, eat loads of veg but still couldn’t find use for it!

haha!! yes fair enough.

Maybe I can play around with the slicing attachments on my food processor. I won't get spirals but could get some nice strips of veggies.

I have more than enough gadgets really.. :)

Mine is in the garage...

And I'm a massive gadget user. Get a good tomato knife instead...

Not a spiraliser exactly, but I have a julienne peeler which will peel thin ribbons off vegetables. I use it fairly often and as it’s only the size of a vegetable peeler it’s easy to store and it was fairly cheap. It’s very sharp though!

RinklyRomaine · 25/05/2022 13:39

I used mine loads for slaws, butternut noodles etc, I have a grey habitat one. I have bought the julienne peeler @toastofthetown mentions and use that daily. Similar job, goes in the dishwasher. The OXO one was about £6.

I have the oxo peeler, it's really good.

I have this tabletop one:

It gets used a lot in the summer to make epic long coleslaw snakes from cucumber, onion, cabbage, carrot etc. My H decided to go low carb so it gets used at least once a week in winter to make courgetti (plus spiralised carrot and mooli) for Asian soups and dishes in place of rice noodles or spaghetti. I sometimes spiralise celeriac or sweet potatoes to make noodles but you have to be careful with cooking timings as they keep on "cooking" whilst warm and can go into mash and they take a fair amount of elbow grease to spiralise. The spiraliser can be frustrating to use as veg need to be fairly uniform in shape to get long spirals and heavier veg tend to fall off the spiked holder if you don't maintain great contact with the cutting plate. It works most easily for courgetti.

My adult DD got one as she liked ours but hasn't used it at all. I also, like others have the Oxo julienne peeler which is great for making small strips of carrot and mooli as quick sides for buddha bowls and thai salads. I've had it many years now and it is still super sharp.

If you have a Kitchen Aid Mixer and £80 to spend you can get a spiraliser attachment that is very strong and I've read good reviews about:

nearlyspringyay · 25/05/2022 16:34

there's a very good reason they're not around so much anymore....

BarbaraofSeville · 25/05/2022 17:37

We have one like this

It's actually very good but it hasn't been out of the cupboard in years because I forget it's there.

It didn't get off to a good start because I think I bought it about 2 days before The Great Courgette Shortage of (a year I cannot remember but it was definitely pre pandemic so maybe 2018/9?) and I couldn't use it for a while because you couldn't buy courgettes anywhere.

Thanks OP, I might have to try again with it.

Funny reading this. I never had one, missed the boat. I could still do with one now though, because as a diabetic I still eat lots of low carb.

Gaspingandleaping · 25/05/2022 18:20

Thinking about these is making me nostalgic Grin

Such an innocent time!

It'll go the way of the George Forman grill; panini maker, rice cooker, nutribullet.... promises the Earth before you realise it's just in the way!
