Would this be a good buy?

Edwardian house, semi, nice road, condition ok but hugely outdated. Carpet in bathroom, very outdated carpets throughout, kitchen very old as is bathroom. But big rooms, large garden.

Want to up size but want to do it in a nice area. I can’t afford a done up place. Would this be worth it? I could get the bathroom done immediately, along with paint, but wouldn’t be able to afford a new kitchen etc for a while.

Is this likely to be a good investment or should I go smaller/ different area/nicer decorated?

You may need to rewire, replaster and replumb, get a new roof etc etc. Get a full survey

We bought a house we loved in a great area that had threadbare carpets, a 40+ year old kitchen, coloured bathroom suite etc. it was a total wreck that hadn’t even been decorated since the early 80’s.

we couldn’t have afforded a done up place. I spent just over 3 years with a kitchen with hardly any cupboard doors on because they fell off a couple of months after we moved in!

I LOVE our house. We have slowly made it a home. Not going to lie there have been occasions, scrolling through SM seeing everyone else’s perfectly done up homes, that I’ve felt a bit depressed about how much we had to do but I don’t regret buying it. Go for it.

Depends on your lifestyle, timings, if you’d be doing work or getting someone in and how easy that is, what else needs doing etc

It's fine if you can afford to do the essential work.

It depends what stage of life you are, whether you have the funds to do it, whether there are hidden costs that are not yet apparent, whether you have the time and energy to do it all and the garden too. I suppose another thing to consider will be the running costs- insulation, heating, all that sort of thing.

I wouldn’t, because I’m at the stage where I don’t want extensive renovations. Been there, done that.

I'd be concerned about the cost of heating it. What are the windows like? Big rooms, drafty windows and poor insulation = ££££ energy bills.

Plus a large garden is nice, but often time consuming to keep on top of unless you want to pay a gardener.
