Getting the whole house done over 3 days….who moves the furniture? I’m getting palpitations at the thought of working it out….

You will have to. Can you contact your fitter and ask for advice on where they will start?

Discovereads · 25/05/2022 08:17

You do.

newtolineofduty · 25/05/2022 08:17

My carpet people ask that we move what we can and if they were doing the whole house would do it across two days to give you chance to move the furniture to other rooms out of the way over night x I'd ask them what they expect though s

purplesequins · 25/05/2022 08:18

you

unless it's specified in the contract (£££)

room needs to be empty or they can't work.

Lazypuppy · 25/05/2022 08:18

You do, either ask them order of rooms or tell them an order that is easiest with all furniture

User7493268965 · 25/05/2022 08:19

Depends who fits, we paid extra with John Lewis, I would look into the small print of your supplier.

PortiaFimbriata · 25/05/2022 08:20

You discuss with your carpet fitters. They'll say either "up to X large items of furniture moved included in the price" or "X pounds extra per item of furniture moved."

You empty all the chests of drawers and book cases into boxes and move them and the smaller items of furniture from room to room as the fitters go - how difficult this is depends on how many uncarpeted rooms you have to store stuff in.

ShinyHatStand · 25/05/2022 08:21

We did this recently.
All the smaller furniture had to be completely cleared into an adjacent room. They did the rooms in 2 batches to allow for this.
They were happy to work around a couple of bigger bits (double bed, piano, empty large book case). They just shifted these from one side of the room to the other as they worked.

It was a massive effort tbh. Particularly the books. We used it as a chance to have a massive clear out.

Give them a call and see what they need from you. Some fitters are more flexible than others.

Oscarthedog · 25/05/2022 08:22

Normally you do although check the contract.

AppleBirdBrush · 25/05/2022 08:31

Is there any chance of spreading out the three days? Otherwise it's going to be a long night for you in between each day.

We did ours in three parts as and when we decorated but it was hard work and time consuming getting the big stuff moved around. I don't think we could have done it in time following the fitters round clearing rooms as they go. Possibly manageable with a meticulous plan but remember they'll be in and out with the carpets etc and you'll all be getting in each other's way.

I agree that having a word with the fitting company would be best.

OverByYer · 25/05/2022 08:35

I just had 2 bedrooms done and had to move the furniture and old carpet out. That was bad enough! Check with your supplier / fitter but we would have had to pay a lot more for them to do it.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/05/2022 08:40

What do you do if you just don't have space to move furniture into. My sofa is massive but there is nowhere else for it to go!

You hope it’s not a rainy day and move the furniture outside while they do that room.

Darcy101 · 25/05/2022 08:59

We had the whole of upstairs recarpeted and when I asked about the moving of furniture, nigh on impossible to do yourself when every room is being done, and you’re not strong enough anyhow! and no spare room to move stuff in to - he said they expected to move stuff themselves and for us just to move surface items, lamps and the like. They did it all in one day !

ComDummings · 25/05/2022 09:00

You do or ask the fitters and they may do it for a charge

RockAndOrRoll · 25/05/2022 09:02

You do, by default (unless paying extra and it's a service they offer) - but for the odd, especially large item you can often ask them to work round it provided they can move it and the rest of the room is empty.

e.g. sofas they would move to one end of the room, start laying the other and then shift it onto the new carpet end to do the rest of the room.

I have only ever asked them to work round a sofa or a bed. Everything else has been removed from the rooms.

JL fitted our downstairs carpet and when they come round to measure and quote we paid extra, I think it was about £40-£50 for them to deal with the 2 sofas, they need to know beforehand though so they send can send 2 people if heavy stuff needs moving

Coastalcreeksider · 25/05/2022 09:03

I had bedroom, lounge and dining room carpeted.

I moved all the small stuff, coffee table, side tables, etc. dining chairs etc., bedside cabinets, storage chest etc.

They moved everything else including the bed and two settees, the dining table and console table plus one armchair.

saraclara · 25/05/2022 09:05

Usually you do it yourself, but fitters (decent ones) are understanding of people's situations. I'm in my 60s and live alone, so it was one of the first things I asked about, as no way could I move the big oak unit in my living room. My fitters were great. I just moved the lighter things and they did the rest.

User3568975431146 · 25/05/2022 09:06

You do

User7493268965 · 25/05/2022 09:08

i thought it was something that was discussed at the quoting stage not 3 days before fitting, I believe Carpetright move up to five items or at least they used to.

TigerRag · 25/05/2022 09:08

WE moved the furniture. But there was a sofa I couldn't move (because it wouldn't fit through my front room door!) so left it. I did explain to the carpet fitters this was the case.

Exactly, the default is you move furniture and if you cannot you tell them at the quoting stage so they can rightly charge you extra to move furniture for you.

BadAtMaths2 · 25/05/2022 09:47

It's 3 days of fitting rather than in 3 days time. I've emailed them to ask. We've had builders in every room for ages so have been playing furniture jenga for 2 years now. But everything is kind of back where it needs to be...but I thought I wouldn't bother putting the bed back together in the spare room or the pictures back on the walls till the carpets have gone down.

There's one very heavy wardrobe that we can't possibly shift - I ended up paying a removal company for an hour's labour to move it from one room to another last time it moved.
