Just got job after 7 years, but....

I am an idiot.

It's a job in a school starting September and I totally totally forgot that we are on holiday to Morocco for a week in October. It was originally booked for half term but it's been moved twice due to the pandemic and it's the second week of October. I completely spaced on that, I still keep thinking it's during the half term!

I am scared that they'll withdraw their offer of employment if I tell them I have to have a week off. I am only working a three day week but still! It was booked three years ago and I wasn't working for a school when it was booked. Are they likely to tell me to piss off. I can't rebook it or change it in any way, I can't afford to. 😭

I'm terrified I'm going to be told they can't have me work there then. I haven't worked in seven years due to being a SAHM and I so desperately want to!

Would start the job, then explain the situation. They might approve the leave: if they don’t you’ll need to choose between the holiday and the job. I’d choose the job!

Mumwantingtogetitright · 24/05/2022 18:35

Just tell them. Explain that you thought it was in half term but have now realised that it isn't. Hopefully it will be fine.

Could you offer to work extra days the week before or the week after in order to make up the time?

Good luck with the new job!!

JackieWeaveristheboss · 24/05/2022 18:51

I agree, be honest with them. Offer to work extra days to make up for it or ask for it to be unpaid. If it was booked 3 years ago it is not your fault.

Good luck with new job.

Anonnnnnnm · 24/05/2022 18:52

Just tell them. Employers always honour pre-booked holidays.

Just be honest, I'm sure they won't withdraw the offer for the sake of three days.

Loopytiles · 24/05/2022 18:57

Sorry, hadn’t spotted job doesn’t start til Sep: would tell them.

purpledagger · 24/05/2022 19:16

Tell them. Sooner rather then later.

i work in HR in Schools and most of the Heads I work with would be more pissed off that you weren't upfront rather than the holiday itself. I think it would be very short sighted of a Head to withdraw an offer of employment for a pre booked holiday.

Lalupita · 24/05/2022 20:08

I think you would have to move the holiday or take it as unpaid leave.

SkoolShoes · 24/05/2022 20:12

Tell them as soon as you can. Apologise and explain what you have said here. It will probably have to be unpaid leave. Maybe worth offering to work up the time in holidays/working late (if you can - depends on the role) if you are happy to do so.

SkoolShoes · 24/05/2022 20:12

Oh and if they are really shitty about it you may have dodged a bullet......

Cavviesarethebest · 24/05/2022 20:14

It be honest apologise ask if they can accommodate it. And if they can’t choose between the job and the holiday - and obviously choose the job!

I would if the holiday hadn't cost 5k

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 24/05/2022 20:15

@Knifer but the job is worth more than £5k

Cavviesarethebest · 24/05/2022 20:16

Well how long would it take you to earn £5 k in the job. How important is it for you to have a job?

You can move it if it's for October. It's a sunk cost anyway whether you go or not now.

I would take the job if you've not worked in 7 years (and I've been to Morocco and wouldn't ever go back))

I work in education and this happens all the time with new starters. Just be honest as soon as possible. If your role is term time only it will be unpaid. If you are whole time they should let you use your annual leave.

Lndnmummy · 24/05/2022 20:26

Don't delay speaking to them. Apologise and offer to make the time up (ie work extra days) before the trip.

sunshineandshowers40 · 24/05/2022 20:29

Just be honest and explain that the holiday has been moved twice. You might have to take it as unpaid leave but they should honour it. It's not like you are going to be away for a month! I'm sure you will be fine.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 24/05/2022 20:29

Honestly you are getting yourself into a massive stress about nothing! Just talk to them about it! If they say no then you have a choice to make - but there’s no point worrying about it until you know if you can or cant have the time off

maybe you can have it as unpaid leave

Duchessofmuchness · 24/05/2022 20:33

Just let them know. They won't withdraw it. Send a not like this ...

I am very much looking forward to starting with you on xx date. I have just noticed today that my pre booked holiday on x - y dates unfortunately does not fall during your half term. I apologise for the inconvenience but unfortunately it is not possible for me to change the dates. I will be happy to work additional days or to take this as unpaid leave. I would of course book any future holidays during school holiday.

Once again apologies for any inconvenience and I am looking forward to seeing you on xxx

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 24/05/2022 21:16

If you are going to agadir then I would definitely take the job over the holiday

Overthebow · 24/05/2022 21:20

Definitely ask, but if they say no then take the job over the holiday, it's more important.
