So I got a letter from the MET of 'intended prosecution' for speeding. On the letter it said I could get a course instead of points on my license if I post the information within 28 days. I forgot about the letter and remembered it 1 day before the 28 days was up. So I sent the letter with a first class stamp on the 27th day from receiving it but it was a Sunday. I still posted it through and haven't heard back from them yet but if they received the letter on the 29th day does that mean it doesn't count and I've sent it late?

Also, I know it's incredibly irresponsible to speed. I've learnt my lesson on that part.

if you posted it on the Sunday so it wouldn’t have been collected until the 28th day meaning you have missed the deadline. I doubt they would make allowances when you have so much time to post it back but you might be lucky. You will just have to wait to hear from them I suppose.

I'm just confused because I returned the letter on the 27th day. Imagine I returned it on the 26th day for example with a 2nd class stamp. It could possibly arrive on the 29th day too

Strange comparison. Who would use a second class stamp on the 26th day and not expect it to arrive late?

So what's the law in this. To return the letter and make sure the postal company returns it within 28 days or to return the letter within 28 days without regards in how many days the postal company will take to deliver it?

return it within 28 days

the fact it says within 28 days means it needs to be delivered to them before the end of the 28th day.

you are responsible for returning it so that it gets there within those 28 days. Nothing to do with the postal company and second class stamps, you alone are responsible for attaching sufficient postage and posting it within the time to ensure it arrives within the 28 days.

if you post it late and it arrives late -your fault.
2nd class stamp 2 days before deadline and it arrives late-your fault
post it first class a week after receiving it- arrives on time.

stop trying to make it royal mails fault that you didn’t post it! Confused

Yeah, I'm guessing you think there's wiggle room because you commenced the act of returning it within the 28 days, but I'd agree with PP that it means they need to have it returned to them i.e. in their possession within those 28 days. Same as every other 28 day thing (returns to shops and such) means the thing has to be done by the deadline. You could try your luck if you have a very good excuse/reason for the delay in responding, but tbh you 'forgetting' about it doesn't reflect well on how seriously you've taken it and doesn't scream that you've learned your lesson. It implies you didn't think it was a big deal. Actions speak louder etc etc.
