Job Interview ….. help!

I have an interview on Friday for a job I really, really want. I’ve not had an interview for 23 years - I’ve been in the same job but it’s time for a change.
its the same money but potential to go further in new job. I know I am going to be super nervous and anxious because I want it so much.
Any advice…..

Practice practice practice! This was me two weeks ago and I got a job offer on Tuesday :)

I searched for job interview advice here and the best tip was to identify three USPs - qualities I had which make you a good candidate for the job. Then you’ve got a made to measure answer for the “why should we employ you” questions.

Do lots of research into the company and really imagine what it would be like to work there. The interviewers will be much more interested in you in situ rather than what you’ve done in the past.

i relaxed once I’d got my outfit and shoes sorted out 😁, so decide on some options from the outset. At least that’s under your control!

Good luck!

I took notes! I was so nervous I was worried about drying and my brain going blank, but it was FINE! Nice people who were interested in what I had to say. You really want this job so your enthusiasm and research will come through. The notes seemed to show I had done my research and prepared, so went in my favour I think.

If they aren’t nice, well you wouldn’t want to work with them anyway!

I don’t know type of job or industry but I’ve interviewed 100’s of people if this helps for some perspective.

In my experience a good interviewer is not there to catch you out; they want you to do well. They have a vacancy that needs filling and you were invited as they think you might be a good fit. Finding new people is a big investment and time sink; they don’t want to spend hours interviewing for weeks on end so be confident you might be the solution to their problem!

  • As already said, lots of research on the company and position is a must and very evident
  • Preparation on the general competency type questions is good but when I ask a question I want the candidate to answer that question and not something they think they need to tell me/think I want to hear (active listening skills)
  • Its ok to take a few seconds to think of the best response (as above, answer the question)
  • No one knows everything and if you did arguably it’s not a stretch role and you’d soon be bored. I have no issue with the response to a question being “haven’t directly experienced that but this is how I would think about approaching it”. I’m assessing future potential also
  • Interviewing is just as much (if not more) cultural and personality fit as it is your experience and qualifications. This is harder to prepare for and is more about being yourself and authentic. People ‘acting’ are quick to spot and doing themselves no favour in the long run
  • I’m often underwhelmed by the questions people ask at the end. That’s not a yay/nay deciding factor but think it’s a unique opportunity and you are also interviewing them
  • Honestly (and this might just be me) I’ll have decided in the first 5-10 minutes if it’s a yes or no
Be friendly, professional, prepared and you’ll do yourself proud and hopefully smash it! Good luck 🤞

I have recently attended a lot of interviews and got two offers so I can give a little advice that helped me.

Most of the interviewers asked competency based questions (tell me about a time at work when you had to make a quick decision? Tell me about a time when you had to find a creative solution to a problem?…) so I prepared at home by searching competency based questions then preprepared short answers.

Before every interview I ran through them as a reminder, and was able to answer most of their questions calmly with good answers. I think also knowing I had prepared made me much more relaxed, which made the interviews go so well!
