How much do ex- motability cars cost?

Hi all, long story but I’ve not even had my car a year, it’s been about 7 months and I’ve paid from £200-500 each month for repairs and servicing since I’ve had it.
Obviously the seller lied and told me it had no faults and just the glow plugs needed replacing but it turns out to be a lot more than that. I still have to do the cambelt which they’ve quoted me around £400 and other repairs but I can only afford to do one thing a month so it takes me up until the end of the year.

I’ve been looking at getting another second hand car for about £5000 but a family friend suggested I buy their ex motability car as they are handing it back at the end of the year. We cannot get a quote on the price until September so just wondered if anyone had a rough ball park because I don’t know if I should and save for the ex motability or just get something asap.

All advice comes greatly appreciated. Thanks!

These cars are handed back and are auctioned off by Motability. They tend to go for too book price as they’ve generally been well looked after as servicing is included in the agreement

Thanks for your reply @LittleG69 they did say there was an option for the person to buy it before it gets auctioned off so was just wondering if anyone knew roughly how much you can purchase it for as you cannot find out the purchase price until nearer the end of the contract.
Also what is too book price?

The person currently leasing the car has the option to buy it. Otherwise it goes to auction.

The ‘book’ price refers to the valuation as set out in Glass’s guide (etc) adjusted tor mileage, condition etc

Do you mean you want to give this person the money to buy their motability car then give it to you and get themselves another car on the scheme?

They might be serviced in accordance with the service schedule but bodywork wise or interior - never ever looked after properly. We always have to claim for damage.

I have one. It was cheaper than the equivalent non-Motability. It’s generally good, but we’ve had issues with the electrics linked to the winch/wheelchair modification. So that’s something to bear in mind.

Mine is ex motobility. Lots of outside damage which the garage sorted before I took it but the interior was immaculate. Near perfect mechanical condition as it did only 2k miles a year. I paid a little under 7k from a dealer.

3 years on its still not given me any trouble, just minor stuff like tyres, brake pads etc.

It’s my aunties car. We’re not related but she’s that close to our family she’s my auntie if that make sense. The car has barely been used I think she has under 10,000 miles and not worried about poor condition as we are the ones who ferry her around in it.
She doesn’t want or need the scheme after returning this car so obviously thought of me before giving it back but we can’t get a price yet.

Thank you for the link @IncompleteSenten from the information provided I think the car will be too expensive for me. I can only afford it up to £10k but anything above will probably be unrealistic.

I just thought anyone who had bought ex motability cars might have been able to give a rough figure so I know whether to wait until the end of the year or just buy something sooner.
Ive already spent so much on this car already I dread getting another used car from someone I don’t know!!

We got an ex mobility car just before Christmas - a 7 seater Vauxhall zafira, which might not be what you're currently looking at (in which case my post isn't helpful, sorry!)

It was £13,400, though some of the other ex mobility cars were slightly cheaper if they were a lower spec model of the Zafira, had damage or more than 30k mileage (price was then more like £11-12k I seem to remember)

The prices had really shot up since the summer, due to the shortage of new cars being imported into the UK - if this has been resolved since then prices might possibly be falling again.

I bought an ex motability car from a motor trader. It was priced in line with other non motability cars on the market so you could have a look on autotrader and find one the same as aunties to get an idea of what they sell for.

I’ve got an ex mobility car , I have had a succession of them over the years as I look for a small clean late reg automatic with low mileage and they tend to be ex mobility , I always buy from a dealership and they usually are list price , I’ve been happy as they are around 3 years old with low miles .
