Is it ok to have a spray tan before a holiday?

I've never had one before but dreading getting my pasty white body out!
I wondered if a spray tan might work and won't go patchy or anything with all the swimming and sun lotions etc?

(I've tried self tanning lotions but I'm rubbish and they either don't make much difference or the are patchy)

Nothing something I would bother with and my DH calls me mozzarella, but I would shave my legs, exfoliate within an inch of my life and moisturise every day the week before I went for a spray tan.

No doubt, this being MN someone will be along soon to tell me that, that is wrong. Grin

If it makes you feel good do it but I’m away at the moment and seriously there are all shapes, sizes and colours.

Nobody really cares what anybody else looks like.

Have a great time and enjoy.

Keeping a spray tan looking good (i.e. even) takes a bit of work: exfoliating and moisturising regularly. For a lot of people that kind of maintenance falls by the wayside during a holiday.

A tan can also lull you into a false sense of security as to how much sun protection you need.

They do start to go a bit patchy but you could take a gradual tan moisturiser with you to top it up. I find that as long as there's a tan underneath you can't go too wrong with the gradual tanners

Branleuse · 24/05/2022 10:36

If you havent had one before then I wouldnt, as the time i had one, it came out much darker than i thought.
Self tan is much easier if you use a self tan mitt to apply. I got one from aldi last week and its been a revelation.

HSKAT · 24/05/2022 10:38

I would get the gradual tan moisturiser.
Spray tans can go patchy after afew days so need a lot of up keep if your wanting it to last.

soberfabulous · 24/05/2022 10:38

Compulsory for me! I haven't lain in the sun for decades but I still want to be brown.

I self tan at home now as products have got so much better than they used to be.

Back in the day we would all book spray tans before a break.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/05/2022 10:43

Of course you can! Most of my friends do. Not me because my skin rejects fake tan in unfortunate patches

lillyrabbit · 24/05/2022 10:43

I find that spray tan quickly goes patchy if you go in the pool a lot! Gradual tan (like the Dove moisturiser one) hold up better.

Yes OP, spray tan will go patchy with the chlorine, salt water and showering on holiday. If you're going to a beach sand also contributes to rubbing it away.

Have you tried proper gradual tan (as opposed to fake tan)? Try Bondi Sands gradual tan in the blue bottle, applied with a mit and a back roller. Do it consecutive days until you build up to the colour you like, then do it every 3rd day with plenty of moisturisers in between. It's virtually impossible to make a mistake with gradual tan, as it's so, well... gradual.

why not just get a natural tan?

why not just get a natural tan?

I dunno, maybe cancer?

diamondpony80 · 24/05/2022 11:32

I used to, but with swimming, sweating, lotions etc. I did find that it went patchy and I ended up having to scrub it off. Now I just go and try not to care what people think. And truth be told, nobody cares what we look like anyway. They're all too busy getting on with their own holidays!
