2.5 yo DDs language level

I promise I'm not a PFB and don't think my child is a genius etc. I genuinely have nothing to compare her to and am just wondering if her speech/language is "normal" for her age. I am suspecting she's "advanced" but am not sure.

DD is just shy of 2.5

She currently does the following;

Singing/music

  • Makes up songs, either to known tunes or swapping words or own tunes

  • Known tunes: she might sing to describe her actions to the tune of baa baa black sheep "I am climbing up the stairs"

  • Swapping words: "Moo moo black cow" / " we wish you a merry Birthday" / "I'm a dingle dangle elephant"

  • Own tunes: she was randomly singing "I'm skipping, yes I am, I am jumping, yes I am"

  • Playing name that tune ; she can hum tunes, and ask you to identify them, she can also identify hummed tunes.

More language based stuff.

She will say things like "the train is as loud as a lion's roar!" Or "the drink is a cold as snow"

Rhymes - she'll identify rhyming words.

Identifies starts of word... Phonemes... phonics maybe? So if you say "D for..." She'll say Dog/Dirt/Dad etc. She comes up with different answers if that makes sense?

She uses tenses and talks about "later/tomorrow/another time" so she might say "we're going to have an ice cream later when we go to the park" or "Daddy is going to work tomorrow". Or "can we read this book first, and that one later?"

Anyway, please can you let me know if this is normal.

I'm not sure what I will do with this information...!

Maybe I just need confirmation not PFB?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Cool

1940s · 23/05/2022 21:56

Why do you want to know?

Louise0701 · 23/05/2022 21:56

Yes that sounds within the normal range for that age.

My 4th child is the same at 2.5 yrs

My pfb didnt speak till they were 3!

Every child is different

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 23/05/2022 22:19

Normal for my oldest. She has a spring birthday was reading (super easy books) before reception. She is on the brighter side for her age but average for our area and far from genius level.

Hopefully that uploaded! That’s the milestone checker for 2 1/2 to 3.

2.5 yo DDs language level
Mumwantingtogetitright · 23/05/2022 22:24

Sounds pretty normal to me.🤷‍♀️

mrsed1987 · 23/05/2022 22:25

My son was the same. I think top end of normal. I also know 2.5 year olds that say very little.

ladydimitrescu · 23/05/2022 22:29

Normal.
With my oldest, she was a sponge at that age and walked around reciting the solar system in order and constantly wanted me to "do learning mummy".

My second didn't speak until 3.5 and ate snails from the garden for fun.

All kids are very different, but yes that's definitely in the realms of normal.

yourestandingonmyneck · 23/05/2022 22:34

I would say it sounds fairly advanced but I would also say that means very little.

They all simply develop at their own pace.

Please don't go putting a load of pressure on her. I've seen so many parents convinced their kids are gifted or geniuses at ridiculously young ages and they never are.

Just enjoy your little girl and let her develop at her own pace. It really doesn't have to mean anything.

WhatNowwwww · 23/05/2022 22:40

In my experience that is advanced. My youngest was similar and nursery were always commenting that her language was advanced for her age. Plus most of her peers when she star the s nursery at that age I could barely tell what they said and they were barely making sentences.

Icecreamandapplepie · 23/05/2022 22:41

Like others have said, they're all so different.

Our first didn't speak till 3 but was taking it all in and is really clever. He's always been great socially, a really people person.

Our third was speaking in sentences before 2, equally as clever by 5 as her older brother, no more so.

Our second was very physically able, and a good all rounder. Didn't speak properly until turned 2.

It can go any way tbh.

Yours sounds like a bright beanie tho! Full of imagination and her own ideas.

They all so wonderful in their own way...

arethereanyleftatall · 23/05/2022 22:50

I'm afraid op, it makes absolutely no difference to anything whatsoever if she is advanced in one area of her developing. Someone elses kid will be advanced at jumping or something. The only bit of advice I'd say from your post, is - don't say all that stuff out loud, it's boring.

twocatsandtwokids · 23/05/2022 23:19

That sounds like my daughter at a similar age, however now she’s nearly 6 you’d not know she was a particularly good early talker! She’s doing well at school, good reader/writer etc, and I do think having a good early grasp of language and the ability to play with it sets a child up well for school/learning.

AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps · 24/05/2022 00:37

Thanks for the comparison. Really interesting :) like I say, I'm definitely not PFB about her. Like he can't ride a scooter for example, but I'm sure other 2.5yo are whizzing along. And she can't count, and I guess she's "behind" in that aspect.

And I know it all evens out, and so it doesn't matter. I was just curious I guess.

LOL, don't worry I don't prattle on about her. Honest!!

I don't blame you for being curious and wanting the opinions of others but these questions are never popular on MN Smile. If you google various milestone checkers for language you will easily see that she is ahead for her age.

RedWingBoots · 24/05/2022 03:18

It's on the upper range of normal.

I've now met plenty of toddlers who were similar. Some have gone on to do very well academically others haven't.

Just keep reading to her and ensuring she plays (so learns) with plenty of things.

Kendrickspenguin · 24/05/2022 07:07

My eldest was able to sing the words to several songs at 10 months. He constantly sang and hummed in a similar way to your DD. He was definitely not advanced developmentally as he has learning difficulties. The similes your little girl uses sound quite echolalic (sp?) which I think is quite typical of a young child learning to speak. Your girl sounds lovely and great fun to be around. She may be very intelligent. However, from my experience with my children the things you have described do not indicate a higher than average language level.

runnerblade95 · 24/05/2022 07:12

Sounds fairly normal to me too. DD could say 3 and 4 syllable words by that age. I only have one child so only have DD to compare. The making up songs with different words and recognising hummed tunes is also familiar to me. Very cute ☺️
