Edinburgh suggestions

Livpool · 23/05/2022 21:16

I am going to Edinburgh next week with DH,
DS and my parents.

I want to do the castle and my parents want to do the boat (?) but any other suggestions? There for 3 days and my DM had limited mobility so any other suggestions?

We are in an apartment and in the Old Town so any nice pub/restaurants that are kid friendly?

Thanks

Would also recommend Pickles, but it's really not on the edge of town! It's on Broughton Street which is very central, just round the corner from the new St James Quarter.
If the weather is crap, I'd recommend the Chocolatarium, which is just off the high street. They do chocolate tours with tasting and making!

If time is short I'd climb Calton Hill. Takes a fraction of the time climbing Arthur's Seat does and you still get brilliant views. And there's a cafe at the top!

Also found the Royal Yacht very interesting and so did my kids. I was surprised. But it is out of the way, there's nothing else really out that way.

Edinburgh Castle has lots of military history if that interests you but not much else.

Another recommendation for the Royal Museum on Chambers Street. Lots for everyone, easily accessible.

@weebarra I wasn't sure on location We'd walked so far that day that it felt like miles & the rain didn't help 🤣 it was so worth it.

weebarra · 26/05/2022 21:17

smith - wasn't having a go 😂. Agree that Edinburgh can feel like a lot of walking!

I have booked Camera Obscura - just for me, DH and DS - so will update

Mary King’s Close is really good, but there are some steep-ish slopes. Just had a quick look on their website and there is a link to a section about ‘accessibility for all’. It’s well worth a visit if possible - might be worthy of further investigation.

You can buy 'day saver' tickets, but not with your debit card. You can only use one debit card per person per trip (but the monetary limit is capped) so go to Lothian bus website for prices and get change ready.
Edinburgh Castle is a bit meh. Stirling Castle is much more exciting, especially for kids. I enjoy Dirleton Castle (bus ride from Edinburgh)
One of my favourite restaurants is Verdos on Newington Road, close to Old Town but loads of buses stop right outside it. Turkish Restaurant, amazing food.
My lot love the museum, its quite interactive.
Camera Obscura is good for able bodied people of all ages.
Have fun (avoid Cafe Piccolo in the Grassmarket.....)

Before or after Camera obscure have a look over the wall (left hand) of the castle 'car park'. Stunning views. We loved sitting in the sun shine in one of the restaurants on Victoria Street.

They can lend you a wheel chair in the museum.

Ghost tour is fun. Mary Kings close was my favourite thing. Found the Royal Yacht massively overpriced and boring . Liked Holyrood Castle, Edinburgh castle a bit meh

stillherenow · 27/05/2022 20:33

I have a hip issue and was in agony after 4 days in Edinburgh. Slightly reassured to read comments about how much walking / hills as I was feeling a bit sad about city trips being so painful! Maybe other places will be better. Edinburgh is lovely though.

Mary kings close is good but there are steps and it’s dependant on age of your day. There’s a minimum age. Can’t remember what it is though. You’ll have a great time. Edinburgh is a beautiful city 😍

Edinburgh local here you can definitely use card for day tickets. i used mine today for me and 2 kids

mynameisnotkate · 27/05/2022 21:49

Also, re drizzle - you may of course get drizzle but the east coast of Scotland is one of the driest parts of Britain and Edinburgh is in the rain shadow of the Pentlands, so it’s pretty dry by UK standards. Can be cold and windy though! And also you sometimes get the haar coming in, which makes everything cold and damp - though also a bit romantic and mysterious!

The buses are really comprehensive, and you don’t need to worry about day tickets or anything - just tap in with the same contactless payment each time and at the end of the day it will work out whether to charge you singles or a day ticket, depending on what works out cheapest.

If your child is young, I recommend Gorgie city farm.
