Anyone elses hayfever really bad this year?

DC is 7, almost 8, really suffering.

Even with antihistamines, nasal spray and eye drops all from the GP is just taking the edge off, they’re still coughing, sneezing and got watery eyes.

In previous years the above would have been enough but we’re back at the GP again because DC isn’t sleeping (so therefore I’m not sleeping) as they’re just too itchy and sneezy, they’ve also started having nosebleeds and come out in rashes on the skin from the pollen.

They’re allergic to all types of pollen so this has been their life since early march and will be until September time.

I just want to know if there’s anyone else suffering? DC says their whole face hurts all the time and they’re very tearful too with it probably due to not sleeping.
Any tips to get through the next few months with my sanity in tact?

We’re doing the usual washing as soon as they come in, taking clothes off, shoes left at the door, wearing a hat and sunglasses to protect the eyes and face, but it’s still not helping much. School are keeping them in at playtime and lunchtime to try and help it but other children probably have it on their clothes as they're worse after lunch.

Yep, my youngest has never suffered and has started. My eldest has increased his prescription fexofenadine to 180mg a day. Might be worth getting to the GP for something on prescription

@Thunderpunt we have fexofenadine on prescription the highest dosage they can prescribe but it's only taking the edge off, plus have nasal spray and eye drops on prescription again making not much difference.

Yes, my eyes are awful this year for some reason, even with usual medications.

Yes me and the DC are having our worst year for hay fever ever 😩 I think it's some sort of tree pollen that triggers it as we tend to get it earlier in the season.

Sorry OP @HayFeverTryingtoTakeUsOut in my haste to reply as no one else did - I skim read your post Blush I can see you've been to GP. My sympathies- it's horrid isn't it. We looked at the injection but I'm just not sure about it (my DS is 19 - not sure if it's even possible to give to kids) but I think DS would consider it if he's gets any worse. At the moment he's managing and just putting up with it

Weirdly my DDs has been much better than normal this year! She’s not suffering anywhere near as much as last year. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don't know if I even dare type this, but my hay-fever has been almost non existant so far this year. Its grass pollen I'm allergic to, so the season is underway but... Nothing!

I'm usually like your DC and in quite a bad way with it. I wouldn't really recommend it for DC but when I've been really suffering, I've often doubled up on my medication. Otherwise, have you tried vaseline in the nostrils to stop the pollen getting in? It feels disgusting but, it works for me. Also, sunglasses being wrap around are more helpful and absolutely zero touching of the face - almost impossible with small kids!

Sorry I can't be much help

Will talk to the doctor about doubling up dosaes as well, even if it's a temporary measure.

I had immunotherapy for MS and it cured my hayfever!

Lonelycrab · 22/05/2022 16:32

Yes I’ve had it bad for the first time in my life. I’m 49.

For me it was specifically oak tree pollen. Doesn’t help that I’ve got a sodding massive oak tree hanging directly over my back garden. Other pollen types have been fine, was doing some heavy strimming of an overgrown lawn and that was ok. But oak trees- sneeze frenzy!

FreezyFreezy · 22/05/2022 16:32

I've noticed it with a few children in my class: they're struggling to work with itchy eyes and tickly coughs. Apart from telling them to wash their faces and suggesting antihistamines at home I'm at a loss as to what to do!

My dc haven't been too bad though but I had to try a different antihistamine (fexofenadine?) which seems OK but still have to use eye drops and inhaler at times.

FreezyFreezy · 22/05/2022 16:34

I should add that at school we have to keep the windows open at all times so that doesn't help with the hayfever situation. Is it the same at your dc's school?

@FreezyFreezy Yes it is the same, all doors and windows open, and DCs classroom is in a mobile so right next to the school field which may not be helping
