Has anybody here experienced alot of hairloss postpartum?

Baby is 7 months and I first noticed the problem around a month ago. I have fine hair as it is and I'm a tad worried I'm going to end up partially bald!

Whenever I run my fingers through my hair I'm losing dozens of hairs which doesn't bode well for the need to brush it on a daily basis.

Is this still within the realms of normal given that it's so late on postpartum? Did you experience similar? What helped? When will it stop? 😔

It’s normal and it won’t last long, don’t worry. For me it was at about 5 months and lasted a couple of months.

greenbirdsong · 21/05/2022 17:35

I experienced this after the birth of my son when he was about 6 months old. It went on for about 2-3 months but it then improved and went back to normal. Try not to worry. It's very common post partum and will improve.
I found using shampoos for 'fine' hair seemed to help my hair look it's best when it was thinning. Like the loreal fibreology.

Yes it's normal. Your body doesn't shed the hair when you're pregnant so as your hormones settle then the excess hair falls out so it looks a lot but it will stop.

Yep. Completely forgot about this after DC1 but I’m now in the middle of it with DC2. I’m sick of fishing it out the shower, picking it off my clothes, and removing it from round the poor baby’s fingers and toes. It’s everywhere and I have no idea how there’s any still left on my head. It lasted a few months the first time but did go back to normal.

Congrats on your baby and even though it was 21 years ago I remember I was very pale and losing lots of hair and lost weight. Doctor sent me to Guy's hospital for hair strand test and my iron levels were unbelievably low so was started on ferrous sulphate straight away and it made a difference within a few weeks. Make doc appt. and try not to worry as you will get it sorted. Get your bloods sorted and ask them to send you for a hair strand test as that can test for all sorts and so accurate.

Cottagepieandpeas · 21/05/2022 18:16

Yes I lost a lot and it also lost it’s colour too. It was a weird pale grey/brown colour.

I asked the dr if it would all fall out. His unhelpful response was “well I’ve never known it happen but it’s not impossible “ 🙄

Needless to say it didn’t all fall out and was back to normal after a few months (this was over 30 years ago so I can’t remember the precise timeline).

I do remember my hoover getting very tangled up with hair as it was very long at the time.

Poppetlove · 21/05/2022 18:26

Yes it’s common after pregnancy.
if you feel it is excessive ask the doctor for a blood test to check your thyroid and hormone levels, also really common causes of hair loss especially after pregnancy.
i had an overactive thyroid after, my hair fell out for a very long time. I dont think it’s back to “normal” though

Thank you all, very helpful and reassuring.

I have a GP appointment this week to discuss severe PMS (possibly PMDD even) so ill use the opportunity to discuss the hair loss and ask for a hair strand test. I have lots of crap hormonal stuff going on it seems.

I was anaemic after I had baby and was prescribed ferrous sulphate (?) but I haven't had a re-test since I stopped taking it so it's possible I still have low iron.

I'm absolutely wiped out after every period so it's probably quite likely actually.

Yup I lost loads around my temples. It came back eventually!

CornishGem1975 · 21/05/2022 18:47

Yeah, absolutely tons to the point I was scared to wash or brush it. It comes good eventually, but it's scary. 2 years later, my hair is still thinner than it was but it's grown back at the front just above my temples where I lost most of it.

springsmiles · 21/05/2022 18:58

Yes lots loads and then had bits at the front of my head sticking up where it started to grow back.

I had really thick hair which is now much thinner

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/05/2022 19:02

It is very normal - during pregnancy, your hair doesn't shed at the usual rate, but then in the postpartum period, there's all that extra hair to come out when the hormone levels return to pretty much normal. The longer your hair is, the more it appears to be that's coming out.

CatSeany · 21/05/2022 19:05

Yes, handfuls and handfuls every day, it's a wonder I have any left. Slowing down a bit now but happened from about 5.5 months significantly and baby is now 6.5 months. If it helps, I don't look like I've suffered hair loss.

MumOnOvaltine · 21/05/2022 23:08

Thanks all, it's good to hear that it's not unusual at this stage. Hopefully it slows and then stops soon. Unfortunately I wasn't blessed with masses of thick hair so I can't afford to lose much 😑

It actually takes a while for iron levels to get back to normal and even now I take it every few months as my periods also wipe me out. Let us know how you get on and try not to worry also. Try to eat lots of iron also and protein and when you take the iron take it with vitamin c as helps to absorb the iron and do not take the iron and have coffee very soon before or after as this stops you absorbing the iron. The body goes through so much being pregnant and it takes a while for things to settle, I was anaemic when pregnant also. Hard to believe is 21 years ago, times flies. Good luck to you and your little one xx

Thanks Boots 🙂

He's a dream and worth it all, but my gosh do babies take it out of you!

I've ordered some floradix, vitamin c, b6, magnesium & evening primrose oil. Roll on getting back to normal x

I lost loads & haven't been able to have a full fringe ever since ds was born, he is 18 now.

user1471538283 · 22/05/2022 10:59

I did! So much so I had my hair cut short (back when it suited me). I took comfort from the loss not being from my parting.

Your body has been through so much. It will take a while to settle down.
