Solo Day Trip to London

If you were to London for the day by yourself, what would you go and see or do?

I've been many many times with my kids but have the opportunity in a few weeks to go alone and I'm so excited because I love visiting.

Any suggestions welcome!

What kind of thing do you like? Art galleries, history, shopping? You can do all 3 but you’ll get a better list if you narrow down what you do/don’t like

Barleysugar86 · 21/05/2022 16:51

if you are here on a Saturday! Lovely area to wander/ eat and drink too :)

Floralnomad · 21/05/2022 16:52

I would go to the V&A because I’ve had it on my list for ages and haven’t got round to it .

Chocolateismyfavourite · 21/05/2022 16:55

Good point!
Yes I really like history and museums, have been to the history and science museums with the kids. Would like to go to something I might not have seen before, a bit quirky, love a bit of shopping, haven't been to a gallery for years🙈like a bit of people watching...

I went to the Holocaust gallery at IWM as it's not suitable for the DC so wanted to take the chance to do it unaccompanied.
Otherwise, I just like wandering around and people watching without having to stop to take a child to the loo / eat snacks every five minutes.
Maybe catch a play / musical matinee? Check for cheap tickets on the day.

Breakfast at the Wolsely, a wander up Bomd Street the round Selfridges. Fortnum and Mason for some nice food things to take home, then down to the river, a day pass for the Thames Clipper, and a couple of hours up and down the river watching the view.

I saw this thread earlier London www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4553678-london

Chocolateismyfavourite · 21/05/2022 16:58

@Floralnomad yes, I've only been there once so I was thinking about that too!
@Barleysugar86 cool, thanks - not been there so that can go on the list 😃

What sort of things do you like? I’ve said what I’d do, but I bet people could come up with some better ideas if they knew what sort of thing you enjoy. Art, theatre, food, shopping?..

Bouledeneige · 21/05/2022 17:05

Some of my favourite places in London include:

  • the Royal Academy, Hayward Gallery and Tate Britain for Art
  • and each offer other nice things to do - Green Park for the RA; a walk along Southbank from the Hayward or the opportunity to get the Uber clipper along the Thames from either the Hayward or Tate Britain
  • the V&A for textile, decorative arts and fashion history - with a lovely cafe and garden
  • the British Museum
  • Marylebone for browsing shops
  • Kew Gardens - just gorgeous
  • Granary Square and Coal Drop Yard at Kings Cross fir cafes and restaurants (evenings you need to book)
Floralnomad · 21/05/2022 17:10

I also really like Greenwich

horseymum · 21/05/2022 17:13

I'd go to the early music shop and Howarths oboe shop but think they're probably a bit niche! I'll get there one day. Burgh market was good for lunch when I've been before.

The Early Music Shop isn’t in London any more - shame, as it was great.

OP, I second Greenwich and using the Thames Clippers to get there. There are also a couple of interesting-sounding exhibitions at the British Museum at the moment, if you wanted to stay more central.

rose69 · 21/05/2022 17:20

How about the Welcome collection in Euston.

GoodVibesHere · 21/05/2022 17:35

The Tower of London is great, so much history there and sad stories of royal scandals, beheadings and so on. The yeoman are fantastic at giving the tour. I could easily spend several hours there. Can see the crown jewels too which is interesting.

Apart from that I'd enjoy a cup of tea & cake whilst people watching.

This is a great, quirky museum

Sir John Soane Museum

And afterwards go to the Foundling Museum not too far away, they often have very interesting one off exhibitions but their permanent exhibitions are really moving. Find the Tracey Emin Sculpture outside, tiny but very evocative. They don’t have their cafe anymore but you are not too far from the Literary Review Bookshop and their lovely but very minuscule cafe.

thereisonlyoneofme · 21/05/2022 18:30

I spent on my own last week, train up to Victoria, then got a river boat as far as the Tower of London, spent a few hours in there, then into St Pauls. I often go up to one of the museums but dont spend too long in there as I find it hard on the legs just pottering and standing
Camden market is brilliant.

happygolurkey · 21/05/2022 18:36

I've always wanted to got to the Charles Dickens Museum. if i had a day to myself in London that's what i'd do. the museum also do a walking tour based on the inspiration behind Oliver Twist which i'd love to do.

Potcallingkettle · 21/05/2022 19:06

Try the Museum of the Home. It’s a nice one to potter around and not too big.
I also like riding one of the Santander cycles. Plenty of cycle paths or quiet roads and easy to hop on and off.

Chocolateismyfavourite · 21/05/2022 19:19

Thanks so much for all the ideas - will be looking some of these up for sure

I am planning a trip later in the year. I have the Highgate tour, an afternoon in the V&A, a musical, and dinner with a friend on my list.
