Wisdom tooth extraction experiences

If you've had you wisdom teeth extracted, what was it like? I've just had a call asking if I'm free tomorrow for my long awaited appointment, and now I'm feeling very nervous. I have two impacted teeth at the bottom, and two at the top, which are growing so far outwards I can't reach them with a toothbrush.

I had all four impacted wisdom teeth out under a general anaesthetic in a dental chair many years ago. It was very traumatic unfortunately and there were a few issues with the anaesthetic (including me not coming round when I should have). I couldn't eat for days, only liquids through a straw and then had to go and have the stitches removed a while later. Everyone told me afterwards that my dentist should have referred me to a hospital for the operation and not done it in the dental chair. It took me a long time to return to a dentist after that!

I had 4 out last year under GA in a hospital. I haf horribly impacted teeth which were a mess.
I ended uo getting dry sockets which yo be honest was agony, but after a month i was back to normal and a year later i can attest it was SO worth it. The recovery period was awful but it was 4 weeks of pain vs hopefully 50 years of happy teeth ahead!

I had one taken out, it was at the dental hospital because it needed drilling into pieces to take them out and was close to a nerve. I also opted for sedation as it was the first dental procedure I ever had an I was terrified. Sedation was fantastic, I don't really have a memory of the procedure. I mean, I do, but it was sorta like being very drunk and relaxed so it's a hazy memory! I was a student at the time and staying at my parents', so my DM came with me and took me home. I went back and slept for a few hours to sleep the sedation off. Woke up and had had some bleeding whilst I was asleep, and it was sore but bearable. The main issue for me was I couldn't eat solid food for at least a few days tbh maybe closer to a week? I remember it was right at the upper end of what they warned me. I just lived off tinned soup til then which was annoying more than anything!

I've had two top ones out, on separate occasions. Two injections which I didn't even feel then out they came, really weird as you can feel it coming out but no pain at all.
They tell you to bite down on a cotton pad thing, I took that out after an hour. Zero pain or discomfort after. Take some paracetamol as soon as you can.
Both incredibly straight forward and painless. The thought it much worse than the actual experience.

I had all 4 removed under GA in the dentists chair 30 years ago. I staggered out and my mum screamed in shock. I was smeared with blood and my face looked like id been smashed with fists. No way should it have been done in the dentists, two days later I couldn't see and had bruises on my chest where they must've braved to pull.

My sister brought all her friends round to point and laugh Hmm

100problems, the chest bruising is usually due to blood that has tracked down through fascial planes under gravity, from the extraction site on your jaw! The dental surgeon doesn’t kneel on your chest to pull teeth!

Did you go through with it op?

toastofthetown · 23/05/2022 19:03

I went to the appointment, but after the dentist looked at my X-rays and had a look in my mouth he said the bottoms ones were too impacted to remove with local anaesthetic so I've been referred to the hospital. I'm pretty sure that's what my dentist said too, and I'm not sure why I ended up there but hopefully I'll get an appointment through soon, and I'm a little relieved I don't need to be awake! So I was all worked up for a two minute appointment in the end.

Very grateful for everyone's stories though, good and bad and I'll bookmark this to read again when the time comes next time!

Had all four out under GA at hospital 20 years ago, plus one molar next to one wisdom tooth.
I was prescribed painkillers to go home with. Some sort of codeine, co-dydramol maybe?

Pain wasn't too bad but couldn't chew anything for a few days. Ate soup and soft things like scrambled egg or spaghetti hoops.

My jaw was very swollen and bruised so I didn't look great for a bit.

I had some nerve damage along one side which meant my tongue was numb on one side for a few weeks. But it slowly got back to normal and didn't really cause me any trouble apart from speaking strangely for a day or two.

I do remember getting back to the car and seeing I had blood on my face in the car mirror. I don't know why dp didn't think to tell me and let me walk out looking in such a state!

I've just had my bottom wisdom tooth removed and it doesn't hurt much but my throat hurts, it's painful to swallow and just paranoid about anything bad happening. My top one was fine, got that out no pain nothing
