Soft Contact lens recommendation

CornyContacts · 21/05/2022 12:20

Hi all, I am about to order contact lens online and was wondering if anyone could recommend a comfortable, good quality and reasonably affordable pair.

I used to wear Bausch and Lomb yearly lenses eons ago but more recently (till a few months ago) I had monthly lens from Specsavers. I don't remember which ones but I was quite happy with them.

I usually wear them 3-4 days a week for about 8 hours and don't require a special type like tauric lenses.

Are the daily ones worth it (in terms of eye health and comfort)?

Could you recommend good daily and monthly lens, please?

Also, good online sellers would be appreciated but I've somewhere started another thread about that.

Thanks so much!!

Daily are fantastic but do work out expensive.1- Day Acuvue Moist are really comfortable as are focus dailies all day comfort.

I have worn B&L pure vision & purevision 2 lenses in the past but I am currently wearing air Optix monthly lenses.
I get mine from Asda opticians, the aftercare is free when you buy lenses from them, they are really reasonable price wise -I actually moved from specsavers as they stopped doing Air optix then tried to put me on their own brand for double the price!

Mine at Asda are £24 for 3 months supply & they reorder them automatically and post them to my home address. I buy my own solution. I may change to 2 weeklies though as I’m suffering a little with dry eyes. I wear them 12 hours a day every day though!

When you say I am about to order contact lens online you won’t be able to order online unless you have had a fitting and aftercare and have a valid prescription for the lenses you are ordering.

if someone does sell you lenses without you having a valid prescription, don’t put them in your eye! They are a prescriptive device that sits against your eye and you could end up with serious problems if the lenses are ill fitting or don’t allow enough oxygen to your eyeball.

Quirkycarrot · 21/05/2022 14:43

I use Acuvue Trueye (daily disposables) and much prefer them to the Specsavers own brand that I've tried. Have also used Acuvue Moist but didn't like the fit quite as much.

Agree with pp that you need to get properly fitted for lenses!

EspeciallyDistracted · 21/05/2022 14:47

I use Air Optix Night and Day or whatever they are called now but I never change them without trying them out with my optician first, I thought it was illegal to sell them without a valid prescription which specifies the lens type as well as the strength, size etc.

I wear acuvue silicone hydrogen as I wear mine for 16hrs a day 7 days a week. They let more oxygen in.

I get them from whoever is cheapest month to month. Pay about £38 for 30 pairs.

actiongirl1978 · 21/05/2022 14:48

You don't need a prescription buying them online.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 21/05/2022 14:49

Daysoft silk are the most comfortable I've ever used in over 30 years of wearing contact lenses

actiongirl1978 · 21/05/2022 14:49

I do have a biannual check that i pay for so I know I have the right prescription but you don't need to show it to whoever sells the lenses.

HSKAT · 21/05/2022 14:49

I buy Dailies AquaComfort Plus from lenstore.
No prescription needed.

Iamnotamermaid · 21/05/2022 14:53

Can also vouch for these.

I get monthly lenses from optician which I use at home but get daily ones for trips & weekends away/holidays etc as they are easier to travel with.

ArabeI · 21/05/2022 14:54

I've mostly worn Acuvue daily moist, for years. I tried some Oasys recently and might make the switch to those. They're even more comfortable.

I've never heard of those. I might look into that.

I usually buy from lensstore. They always divert me to buy from lensstore EU, without a prescription, though I think they must have record of my prescription as I get eye tests free through them as a customer.

Precipice · 21/05/2022 15:01

I've been wearing Clariti 1-day lenses (produced by CooperVision) for years, at least about a decade now (before that I used to wear - some that came in a blue box :D) I wear them all day everyday, save for if I'm up very late at night or just out of bed. No discomfort, no eye infections. They advertise that they provide UV protection for the eye too.

underneaththeash · 21/05/2022 16:05

Please don't change type and brand without getting them fitted at an aftercare appointment first. I reckon 33% of my contact lens appointments at the moment are taken up sorting out issues with people who have changed brand and now have a problem with their eyes/lenses/vision.

Even if a lens has the same specification as another branded lens it will not fit in the same way as they differ in terms of thickness, edge lift, optic size and peripheral curve dimensions.

You're putting something into your eye; poorly fitting lenses increase the risk of infections significantly, as well as redness, irritation and dryness symptoms.

bootsandcats · 21/05/2022 16:17

I use acuvue oasys hydraluxe dailies as recommended by my optician after trying several types.

ArabeI · 21/05/2022 16:20

Agree you shouldn't just change brands without checking with your optician: I had a trial with the Oasys and my measurements weren't the same. I think she changed the base curve for that particular brand.

EspeciallyDistracted · 21/05/2022 17:40

Yes, I tried Acuvue Oasys monthlies once (having been wearing monthly silicone hydrogels for years) and they just didn't feel right even though in theory they should have been perfectly ok for me.

DareDevil223 · 21/05/2022 19:29

Boots protect Platinum daily disposables. They let a lot of oxygen into the eye which I need as I had some blood vessel overgrowth due to not getting regular checks. For this reason I implore you not to buy without a prescription, fitting and proper regular checks. You only have one pair of eyes.
My eyes are fine and healthy but I could have caused problems for myself if I hadn't wised up.

I didn't realise I could get contact lens from Asda. I wanted to order them online because it's really difficult for me to go to Specsavers at the moment or any other optician in town but Asda is quite convenient. I'll give them a call tomorrow. Do they do contracts?

You can get contact lens online without prescription but if it's a good idea I'm not sure.

I think my last contact lens brand might have been acuvue. If I find an old box of them at home maybe I can just order exactly the same thing. I was quite happy with them and they had been fitted by an optician.

I've been using Daysoft silk dailies for about 8 years. 15/16 hrs a day 7 days a week never had an issue.
I get my prescription from local optician and order online. 30 pairs are about £12 odds including delivery

underneaththeash · 28/05/2022 19:50

@HereLiesBetelgeuse unfortunately that's a perfect example of why you shouldn't change brands. Daysoft silk only have a dk/t of 26 and are not suitable for a wear time of 15/16 hours 7 days a week. Your cornea requires a certain amount of oxygen to stay healthy and that lens doesn't provide enough for full-time wear.
