Compulsory volunteering- how to find something?

We have 3 days compulsory volunteering at work but as I don't live close to work I need to find somewhere local to do it.
How do you approach a charity for only 3 days? I don't really want to commit to something long term. Ideas please!

Is there a local volunteer organisation which coordinates opportunities for local charities or the do-it website? If you can be flexible on dates then fundraising events, marshalling at a fun run or show or conservation days may be examples of one off opportunities.

Holidayroundthecorner · 21/05/2022 09:22

Some fire departments are running a befriender scheme near me. Maybe on in other areas?

Bigoldhag · 21/05/2022 09:23

Our local food banks often are happy for volunteer days.

Lochnessgiraffe · 21/05/2022 09:24

I can be flexible on dates as I can take them off work paid. I'll try and look at fun run type things thanks

Your thread title is a fantastic oxymoron!!!

It's made my day Grin Grin

OuiWeeOui · 21/05/2022 09:28

Compulsory volunteering? Thats an oxymoron isn't it?

UselessTrees · 21/05/2022 09:29

Local litter-picks or beach cleans, maybe? Does it have to be organised or can you just go and do something solo?

Yeah if it’s something you can just do yourself this could be good. Some councils will give you equipment to use

Lochnessgiraffe · 21/05/2022 09:31

It has to be organised via a charity so I can provide the charity number. I am aware it's an oxymoron but it's on my objectives

Just ring a local charity that you feel you'd like to help & ask them
if they'd like 3 days help.

PortiaFimbriata · 21/05/2022 09:35

If you Google "friends of" plus a local park then they might have gardening/clear up sessions for volunteers.

The problem is that ad hoc stuff like that is normally at weekends.

Lochnessgiraffe · 21/05/2022 09:39

Don't mind doing it at the weekend I can just take a day off during the week. I've found the local Pride and might find out if they need help.

Look for charities having local events. That way you would be committing to a day at a time.

watcherintherye · 21/05/2022 09:49

What about The Wildlife Trusts or other conservation charities, if you like the outdoors? Ds volunteered with our local one for his D of E. It wouldn’t have to be long term, unless you really enjoyed it, of course!

mum2jakie · 21/05/2022 09:51

Are there any charity shops locally where you can offer to support with donations for the three days?

Theimpossiblegirl · 21/05/2022 09:55

What about collecting? So three days at an event or outside shops?
Or sign up to a litter pick/community project?
Local to me I would approach one of several wildlife charities.

LindaEllen · 21/05/2022 09:55

Do you have any skills that might benefit other people? For example, some independent schools are registered charities, I play a musical instrument, so if it was me, I'd get in touch with the school and ask if I could run workshops for the kids over those three days, with a little performance at the end. I know that kind of thing wouldn't work for everyone, but if you can do anything at all - be in music, knitting, painting.. whatever.. you could probably do a workshop in either a school, nursing home, Scouts/Girl Guides etc.

Hi,

I'm the volunteer coordinator for All Aboard shops charity.

We have 21 charity shops in London and Manchester, that raise funds for UK registered charities.

Through the sale of donated goods in our shops, our grants have supported a wide range of causes from research projects , learning programmes, hospital equipment, to outings and respite for terminally ill children and residential care for the elderly.
You can read more about all the projects All Aboard have helped support at www.allaboardshops.com

Please do contact me if you'd be interested in volunteering in any of our shops, warehouse and Head office at [email protected]

I think charities are getting used to being approached by people in the OPs position.
(I had to arrange some volunteering for our workplace recently). There are probably several charities local to you OP, who would snap your hand off😊

Yodaisawally · 13/06/2022 14:57

Is there no direction from your company? I'm involved in this in mine and we have links with local organisations or colleagues can volunteer for something that means something to them.

The whole thing is a farce though. The Social Value Act was brought in to help communities, now it's a tick box exercise for companies to drive revenue because they are hitting their SV targets which backs into the funds and investors who have their own targets. It's not about the people anymore.
