How long does it take for adult tooth to replace fallen out baby tooth??

Random question of the evening.

DD (8) has lost 8 teeth so far, 4 on the bottom and 4 on the top all the central ones.

The first 6 times the adult tooth always came through in a couple of weeks after the baby tooth fell out.

I was always under the impression that the baby tooth fell out when the adult tooth was ready to come through.

She lost her 7th tooth on Boxing Day and the 8th one fell out about a fortnight later, still no sign of either of the adult ones coming through yet. They're the top 2 lateral incisors.

Is that normal??

My eldest Ds10 is having the same issue! I don’t know what the answer is but taking him to the dentist soon just to get them checked.

I'd be interested to know what they say @Oizys if you don't mind reporting back.

We had our check ups just before Christmas and due to the backlog from covid times our next one isn't until May next year.

It took a year for my DS's adult top teeth to come through. I took him to the dentist after 6 months and they weren't worried, but took an xray anyway which showed that they were there and coming down just very slowly!

My DD had the same, dentist said they don’t worry about it until a year has passed. She had lost all her teeth at once (8 front ones!) so they did an X-ray to check there were adult teeth there! They all came through in time.

from memory, my DS waited about 11 months for the top front two 😊

My DS also lost a top front tooth just before Xmas and the adult one hasn't come through yet. He actually had a dentist check up yesterday and dentist said all fine, he could tell it was there, maybe just needed more space (ie next baby tooth to come out).

My sons top lateral incisor is coming through. It has taken 2 years. Dentist was a bit concerned and he had to have check ups every 3 months for the past year to see where it was and an X-ray to make sure it actually existed! He said it’s because my sons mouth is small and there isn’t much space. He will need braces. He’s almost 10 and has only lost 8 teeth so I worry about how late he will be having these braces but I also had to wait until 16 as my baby teeth took so long to fall out.

The roots of the baby teeth are resorbed when the adult tooth erupts underneath them. The two upper central incisors are very wide and can cause resorption of the lateral baby teeth at the same time as the central baby teeth ( think two for one effect) so they can cause premature loss of the laterals before the adult laterals are ready to erupt.
Ther is a possibility that the laterals are congenitally missing, but I wouldn’t X-ray until at least 12mnths after the loss of baby teeth since the laterals start to form about 11mnths after the centralsCentrals are starting to form around birth the laterals don’t start to develop until babies are about 11 mnths old. It follows that they erupt quit a while after centrals but the baby laterals may have been resorbed by the earlier erupting centrals.
Hope this makes sense.

Really helpful replies, thank you all so much. I'll just wait patiently for another couple of months & see where we are then.
